West Ham manager Graham Potter has made a personal phone call to Angel Gomes in an attempt to rescue the Hammers’ failing transfer deal.
The news was revealed to Claret & Hugh this morning during a conversation with a source close to the player.
It comes after increasing media attention suggesting the Hammers were pulling out of a deal for the soon-to-be free agent.
However, C&H understands that new West Ham boss Potter is desperate to land England midfielder Gomes as he seeks to overhaul the Irons squad.
Unfortunately for Potter and West Ham, the issue doesn’t appear to be a lack of interest in the coach. Instead, it’s the underwhelming offer put forward by the club, which has left the Hammers trailing their Premier League rivals in terms of wages and signing fees.
C&H was informed: “The manager has called Gomes personally, and there is the potential for a meeting.”
“But West Ham made a low offer ages ago, and nobody has come back to even ask what it would take to sign the player. West Ham are about 15th down the list.”
There certainly seems to be confusion on the side of Gomes and his team, who were less than impressed with the nature of the January approach.
The source continued: “The new manager [Potter] wants him, but the effort from the club doesn’t really match that. It’s odd because they’ll throw money at Soler and Rodriguez but offer Gomes less.”
Reading between the lines and following two months of listening to both sides on this transfer mess, it really does seem incredibly unlikely. As we reported earlier, West Ham are lacking an experienced transfer negotiator, and it is seriously hurting the club’s chances of landing players identified by the manager and scouting department.
Hopefully, there will be some high-level intervention in terms of negotiations because the failed bids for Gomes and Jhon Durán have left the club looking like something of a joke.
As our song says just like our dreams they fade and die been a fan all my life saw first game in1958 ! You learn to dream of everything and expect nothing
There has been a lot of hype over David & Gomes due to fact they are both ar same club and out of contract.
With Gomes history not sure if he can demand outlandish wages (again this stems from link with David).
They are both going to be playing the field no matter what they say it will be money related.
There’s going to be plenty more fish to fry at less cost.
Whu cannot afford to match these demands and need to concentrate on affordable assets.
Suggestion is Potter’s on bended knees begging him not a good negotiating policy. To
If Gomes is more concerned about money then we can do without him. Vlad Coufal considers himself very fortunate to be happy doing his job playing football and he doesn’t get the outrageous salary. We need more Vlad!
Two hopes……no hope and Bob hope!
Rushing around making a song and dance trying to get him says it all about West Ham. Player will now want the moon on a stick and probably sit out most of next season either injured or Potter dosent like the way he trains/gently getting him used to premier league!
As a lifelong west ham supporter, now 57,just to let all you dreamers, know, we will never progress, with the PE, teacher, as manager, and, that idiot Sullivan in charge, as his appointment for manager in the summer, tells me we have no ambitions to move forward, keep dreaming, cause we all know the outcome, sadly, COYI, Get rid of the owners and the PE,teacher Potter
Crazy not to go all out to get him. Even if we pay him a healthy signing on fee and £150k a week, it still works out less than his resale value in a few years time.
look at our results, style of play, playing roster for the last 18 months and then add to that the way the chairman likes to do his grifts, it’s no wonder we look like a joke
