Half Time: Schalke 04 0 Irons 0

Half Time: Schalke 0 West Ham United 0

West Ham produced another painful 45 minutes in their opening game of the German tour against Schalke.

It was a teeth grinding display with passes going astry and the likes of Kevin Nolan and James Collins producing errors which could easily have led to goals.

The captain was very lucky not to pay the ultimate price when giving away a ball in the fourth minute but thankfully Barnetta fired over the top.

Later Collins allowed a ball to pass under his foot and from the attack Cameroonian Choupo-Moting lost his man and fired a shot against the upright.

The Hammers had lined up with a 4-5-1 formation – Carlton Cole inevitably being the one – with new loan signing Carl Jenkinson on the bench.

They defended reasonably well but there was absolutely no sign of the promised new attacking policy apart from a few runs down the right by Stewart Downing

In fact they failed to raise a worthwhile attack or shot on goal in a first half which again lacked energy and technique.

Worrying!
