A report that Winston Reid could make a return to the Hammers squad in January would appear to be way wide of the mark.
According to a report from the Athletic: whilst Kansas would like to sign the 32-year-old centre-back on another season-long loan, they wouldn’t be able to afford his current wage demands.
In fairness they internet based Athletic suggest the central defender faces a bleak future at the London Stadium but the reality is that some sort of pay off could be required.
Manager David Moyes declared recently that he would need to have talks with Winston and his advisors over his future.
So that seems to suggest that him becoming part of the 25 man Premier League squad in January is doubtful at best and were there to have been any real chance of it happening it’s less than unlikely he would have been on loan at Kansas in the first place.
Before accepting a deal in the States he had failed to complete what are seen as Under 23 recovery excursions with the Hammers.
Any plans to come to a mutual agreement will be tricky too as, incredibly, the player is not out of contract with us until 2023!
I think he’d be a useful squad player. Not first team every week his body wouldn’t hold out. But could do the odd game. May as well use him if he’s under contract a few more years. Appreciate it’s less intense but he has shown in MLS he can maintain a degree of fitness.
