Hammer of the year trophy to return pitch side

The original Hammer of the year trophy is to return and will be presented at the London Stadium pitchside on 4th May the  West Ham United Official Supporters’ club have announced.

It was the supporters club which founded the Hammer of the year award at the beginning of the 1957/58 season when members wanted to recognise the outstanding player with an official award. The first recipient was defender Andy Malcolm, whose form helped Ted Fenton’s side to win the Division Two title on the final day.

A message sent to the social club’s members read: “We are excited to announce that following discussions with West Ham United, the original West Ham United Official Supporters’ Club Hammer of the Year Trophy will be presented to the winning player on the pitch at the final home game of the season!!

What’s more, two lucky members will have the honour of presenting it to the winner!!

We are sure that many of you remember that the Hammer of the Year Trophy was always presented by the Supporters’ Club but this ceremony stopped after the Supporters’ Club pulled out at the last minute and the original trophy was then replaced by an award made at the end of season awards dinner.

We have now got together with the football club to reinstate the original trophy presentation at the Southampton match.  Previously, we understand it might have just been Committee members that did the presentation but we believe that it should be two of our most regular attendees at the Match Day Bar that represent the Supporters’ Club so we thought we would have some fun and will therefore be holding a draw to select two members from the top 50 or so attendees based on the recorded attendance on our membership system.

The draw will take place at 1pm at Stour Space this Saturday BUT the member with the winning membership number drawn must be present at the draw to claim their prize and be able to immediately confirm their availability to present the trophy on Saturday 4th May.”
