Hammer wins at Olympics

West Ham’s Winston Reid led New Zealand to an opening win at the men’s Olympics tournament.

The Hammer captained his country to a 1-0 victory over South Korea, marking their first ever victory in the competition.

Burnley striker Chris Wood netted the only goal of the game.

New Zealand are playing in their third Olympic games but have never won a match before today, only picking up two draws as their best return.

They will also play Romania and Honduras in the group stage as they look to progress into the knockout stages and eventually come home with a medal.

Reid ended the game with a bandage on his head after suffering a nasty cut but he overcame that to last the 90 minutes and see his country through to an important win.

Women’s players Tameka Yallop and Mackenzie Arnold also won their opening game, playing for Australia as they beat New Zealand on Wednesday, while Adriana Leon’s Canada side drew 1-1 with Japan.
