The links with up-and-coming strikers such as Lucas Stassin and Adama Bojang continue to fill column inches and web ‘reports’ by the score. The truth is, West Ham are in need of a striker with more than one season behind them, an immediate competitor for Niclas Fullkrug who can hit the ground running – literally – as a Premier League starter come the second week in August.

Stassin, Bojang or any other ‘wonderkid’ currently occupying the media won’t cut the mustard, and in any case, the Hammers have two of their own already. Daniel Cummings is due to land at London stadium next week and Callum Marshall has returned from a hugely successful loan spell. Either, or both of the talented duo could make it into the Premier League squad for next season but only as third and fourth choice.

Which means there is a burning need for a senior frontman: When a report appears in today’s standard.co.uk for one of the Premier League old hands – Dominic Calvert- Lewin , it needs to be taken seriously. Available on a free with ‘just’ a signing on fee due to the player, Calvert Lewin ticks a lot of boxes for fixing West Ham’s short term paucity of firepower.  As the Standard put it:

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has confirmed that he will depart Everton as a free agent this summer, with West Ham United interested in the striker.. According to FootballTransfers, the Hammers made an approach to the 28-year-old a fortnight ago… Calvert-Lewin earned £100,000 per week at Everton, and the report claims that the Hammers would be willing to improve his pay packet should he make the switch to east London on a free transfer.”

Critics ( and boy, will there be critics!) will see it as another old, injury-laden striker on the cheap – but with two youngsters already at the club, an ‘experienced old pro’ like Calvert Lewin is certainly an upgrade on the ‘Ings-Fullkrug’ option from 2024-5.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Jack Wiltshire and Kyran Dyer! Will they never learn!

  • Victor Meldrew says:

Sorry but I don’t believe it.

  • Chris W says:

“Old”? Since when is 28 old? Isn’t a player supposed to be at their peak at that age?

  • Taffyhammer says:

Calvert Lewin is not good enough to lace the boots of Danny Ings. Jamie Vardy would at least do a good job for the season ahead. Dominic has never set the footballing world alight.

DCL is a no from me.

  • HammerDan says:

So our Board have learned absolutely NOTHING then!!

  • James says:

Just what we need. An ageing, injury prone striker with a below average scoring record. He’d be such a typical West Ham signing. Good work 👏

  • Georgie boy says:

We don’t want Calvert-Lewin he’s not good enough for Everton so why should he be good enough for west ham! If we go down this road of injury prone strikers in their later years on huge wages we will be relegated!!!

    • Linda says:

Good, you lot were bragging when Harry Potter joined West ham oh players will rather play for potterxthan Moyes, watch us finish higher than Everton, 16th Everton 13th. 😄

  • Jamie Hickman says:

Nobody can convince me that Potter wants this guy. Has Sullivan’s fingerprints all over it

    • Roman says:

Isn’t it high time Sullivan retired. Our recruiting strategy is abysmal. Bargain basement aging players with no residual value and meanwhile our academy prospects leave. West Ham have been hopeless under the Steptoe and son regime.

  • Saul says:

I love reading the OTT reactions to these stories. Media nonsense, don’t let it get your knickers in a twist, for Gawd’s sakes…!

  • Kenny Irons says:

It’s getting more pathetic by the minute – DCL was a top striker a few years back – check, WAS. He’s been constantly injured for last few seasons, the man has had it !
Another one for the West Ham Infirmary.
We are a total embarrassment of a football club, and are nailed on for the Championship.
The only good out of it if we go down is that maybe Sullivan & Brady will clear off – these idiots who have as much football knowledge as I have of Brain Surgery, are a millstone around our necks…..

  • Jeeps says:

    What’s happening about Guessand?

  • mark wiggins says:

Poor signing in fact he’s not an upgrade in anyway would be a waste of money . So we not learn

  • Ammers 66 says:

My issue is not first choice with experience or back up or third choice……. it’s FFS sign somone! One week to go to training and more chat about more leaving, signed players not wanting to come back. What are they all doing? Is Wide Boy Dave playing games? It’s not melodramatic, we weren’t good enough last year and we’ve let 3 players go since then who played most of the closing games. Don’t judge Potter on this sh it show.

  • Essexiron67 says:

    Agreed

  • Murdo Durrant says:

Another Sullivan ‘buy’ will cost us an arm and a leg in signing plus mega bucks a week. He’s never been any good at Everton. So much for getting a younger squad. Fullkrug is a better player and scored the same number of goals as DCL in less games. We’re going down with Sunderland and Wolves and Sullivan is to blame

    • Bookie2theStars says:

Murdo, how much do you want to bet on Sunderland, Wolves and West Ham for the drop?

  • Al says:

Fullkrug is a much better footballer than calvert lewin, even ings best seasons are better than calvert lewins best.

This is a sullivan pick I’ve heard he wants to offer him 125k without the sign on fee. Absolute joke.

  • Glenn says:

Well let’s get the treatment table ready…….

  • Dean says:

Oh dear me we really are scraping the barrel with this one, he played 26 games last season and scored 3 goals, his injury record is utterly woeful and yet we are now being told by Martin that he is the answer as he’s an upgrade on ings! Blimey if he’s the answer I’d hate to know what the question is. No wonder sulli treats us with contempt when fans are happy to see second rate injury ravaged players coming in

  • Phil Baker says:

What is ‘free’ ? If DCL and agent want a 10 million signing on fee with 150K a week , then it’s a questionable deal given that he’s normally injured for a third of each season . No signing on fee and 100K a week might be worth the gamble but it’s still a lot to pay if he’s useless .
