Hammers bottle it in thriller

West Ham blew a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Arsenal in one of the most astonishing games of football this season.

The Hammers were absolutely irresistible in the first half and raced into a 3-0 lead.

A brilliant goal from Jesse Lingard gave the Irons a deserved lead, as he belted it into the top corner from the edge of the box.

And a superb piece of quick thinking from the Man United loanee led to the second goal, as he took a quick free-kick and Jarrod Bowen latched onto it, before firing below Bernd Leno.

It was 3-0 just after the half-hour, as Tomas Soucek turned home Michail Antonio’s header.

Arsenal made it 3-1, though, before half-time as Alexandre Lacazette’s venomous strike was inadvertently turned into the top corner by Soucek.

Craig Dawson’s own goal on the hour made it 3-2, as he headed in Calum Chambers’ cross.

But there were then two huge chances for 4-2 and Antonio managed to miss them both!

The first was blocked by Kieran Tierney as he shot, but then he somehow turned the ball onto the post after Said Benrahma’s cross. That miss cost the Hammers all three points.

The Hammers continued to retreat and Arsenal equalised on 82 minutes, as Lacazette headed in Nicolas Pepe’s brilliant cross.

David Moyes had no answer to Arsenal in the second half, unfortunately, and this is a performance that could prove mighty costly in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

  1. I think today showed we will be out of our depth in champions league ..35 min unplayable then a little pressure and we fold ..point is always good against the top sides but no one should even draw after being 3-0 up ..bitterly disappointed…imo …

  2. And that’s why Southgate doesn’t pick Cresswell for the England squad. All three goals from crosses down his side! 😠

  3. Honest endeavor and organization. No stars ( apart from Dec) no frills no divas. We cannot match teams when they come up with a touch of class. Ok, Arsenal only turned it on in spells, but we’ve seen the same quite a few times this season. We badly need options from the bench that would make an impact.

  4. You have to give John Moss a mention here. If a defender had stopped that attack like he did, he would have been booked. Disgraceful decision. But just to show how it was not a one-off, he gives them a free kick that was not only wrong, but actually should have been our free kick. Then he allows it to be taken with the ball still moving. For some reason, we switched off when we had them worried, but even that would have got us through, but for the atrocious refereeing.

  5. Spot on Macca… Cresswell is not nearly an international defender… defensively so poor.

  6. Arsenal aren’t a top side though, Childish.

20 minutes left when Noble came on, which again, shows Moyes’ inferiority complex when playing the name rather than the team. Still, i think the defence overall was poor today; Arsenal could have won with better finishing and to say that after being 3 to the good shows how poor the back 4 were. Soucek also kept giving the ball away.

Against this Arsenal team, the best form of defence was attack. The fact we stopped doing that was to our detriment.

  7. For me this game showed that we are punching above our weight and that Benny and Bowen are looking out of their depth in the premiership.Dinamo Zagrebs Orsic got an impessive hat trick against Spuds,is the type of player i would like to see us trying to sign over players like Armstrong.

  8. Cresswell was crying out for help, fredricks or Johnson in a back 5 would of been a good tactical decision, they bring in Noble who can’t run and the fredricks on the right, tactically so out of their depth this management.

  9. And still we got a point more out of Arsenal than Tottenham managed.
