Hammers by-pass Evans as defender joins Foxes

West Ham’s earlier interest in Jonny Evans is now dead following his move to Leicester City on a three year deal today.

Under David Moyes there was great interest in the former Manchester United central defender who was relegated with West Brom last season.

But the speculation went entirely quiet when Manuel Pellegrini’s appointment ended the Scot’s reign as Hammers boss.

Despite the 30 year old having a £3.5 million relegation clause in his deal the Chilean clearly held no interest in him.

That suggests – given the Hammers boss is determined to bring in one or possibly even two new central defenders – that he is looking for different or better qualities than those Evans could offer.

The Hammers have have been linked with Barcelona’s central defender Marlon Santos thus far in this summer window although a concentrated effort to keep targets under wraps is currently the order of the day at the club!

  1. A very good player no doubt and a ridiculously low fee for such a player but at 30 his best years are behind him and Pelle wants to make a statement of intent while the momentum is clearly behind him and young hungry players with a good engine seems to be the order of the day with his alleged targets. (Still don’t see Toure as a target despite today’s MSM being all over it) This would have been top wages for a player to give us a couple of years and then need replacing. Many are saying about Reid being up for sale and past it etc, would Evans be better and a year older?
I am sure that we are looking at the long term with players that will not only come in and do a job this year or next but will be here for many years and or be improved and sold on for big fee’s. (if it’s deemed necessary or worthwhile to sell)
Despite the MSM maintaining their stance on a rift already and their best efforts to undermine the negotiations with young Declan Rice I am very optimistic for this coming season and think the Pelle factor will be a huge sway when attracting players and the way we play. COYI.
