Hammers chase Bundesliga giant defender

West Ham United are reportedly eyeing a new centre-back in the upcoming January transfer window, as revealed by a recent report from The Sun. According to the tabloid newspaper, David Moyes has set his sights on Stuttgart’s Dan-Axel Zagadou as the ideal player to reinforce the team’s defence. In all likelihood the player will have been identified and scouted by Tim Steidten following the successful transfer of Konstantinos Mavropanos from the same club.

Zagadou, 24, departed Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer 18 months ago and subsequently joined Stuttgart, although West Ham had reportedly pursued him at that time. With the Hammers now in the market for a central defender to provide cover and competition for players like Angelo Ogbonna, Nayef Aguerd, and Kurt Zouma, they could once again attempt to lure the 6 feet 6 inches tall Frenchman to London. Whilst Zouma has been playing well, it’s clear that he can no longer play twice per week and father time appears to have caught up with Ogbonna.

Currently valued at a reasonable £10 million, Zagadou has two-and-a-half years left on his contract, making him an affordable and relatively low-risk option as silly season approaches.

During his stint with Stuttgart, Zagadou, who has represented France at all youth levels, has notched one goal in 38 appearances across all competitions.
