Hammers’ classy tribute to late, great Foe

West Ham have paid a classy tribute to the late, great Marc-Vivien Foe ahead of tonight’s Europa League clash with Lyon.

Foe died after collapsing during the FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final between Cameroon and Colombia in June of 2003.

A phenomenal midfielder, Foe played for both the Hammers and for Lyon and Stuart Pearce was on hand to deliver a classy tribute to his old team-mate ahead of the crucial European encounter.

As recounted by the club’s official website, Pearce laid a Hammers shirt down at the Stade Gerland, where he passed away, and gave an interview with the Hammers site afterwards.

Speaking of the “humble, family man”, Psycho, who played alongside him and coached him too, waxed lyrical about just how good the great man was.

Foe’s death was by no means in vain, as heart screening is now a routine part of football, both at the peak of the professional game and all the way down to the grassroots.

Pearce said: “I thought it was really fitting that we came here today to pay tribute to Marc, for what he did as a footballer, which was magnificent for West Ham and Lyon at this place, where we’re stood today.

“On top of that, it’s for what he was like as a man. He was a fantastic man to work alongside. I’ve coached him, I’ve been a teammate of his as well, and he was just a smashing man.

“That’s what I remember first and foremost: what he stood for as a man. He was a very quiet, very humble family man, and as you say, it’s really poignant that we’re here today, and rightly so.”
