West Ham have been offering to subsidise players’ wages by up to 50% in order to facilitate some outbound transfer business.
That is the sensational revelation disclosed to Claret & Hugh by a top club insider late last night.
The Hammers are desperate to offload players to free up squad places and generate additional transfer funds to bring in new players before the window closes.
As reported previously, Carlos Soler is “pending” following an agreement between West Ham and PSG, but the Irons need to offload a few players before completing the deal.
However, our top Hammers source has expressed frustration at not being able to generate more player sales despite trying everything. The club insider told C&H, “We are struggling to get players out, even if we cover 50% of their wages.”
I’ll leave it up to everyone’s imagination who those players might be, but suffice to say, there will be some excellent deals to be had at West Ham as the transfer window draws to a close.
For all those knowledgeable pundits criticising the club for not giving DM a new contract, this is his legacy
Young players out of contract and other older players no longer up to the job but hard to move on due to their high wages
This shows clearly what a gigantic waster of his own money Sullivan is/was(?) playing football manager to bring ‘names’ in who were either past their best but with ‘famous, names and previous clubs They were only after the London lifestyle, and had to be paid huge wages to play for us. None were interested in playing for West Ham, just the benefits that came with it. His ‘negotiating skills’ caused us embarrassment in other leagues and gave our club a bad name.
Hopefully, please God , this has changed and we’re not lumbered in the future with players happy to stay and spend the big money we’re paying them to fully enjoy their London lifestyle without doing anything for it.
Plus, he gave far, far too much power to DM. That went to his head and ultimately was a big part of his downfall in the end, yet both he and Sullivan blamed the fans – a complete no-no especially at our club. We don’t forget how we are treated.
I really want our club to change and be run more like Brighton than Chelsea.
This is more about the wage bill than squad places. The last I heard Chelsea had 40 players so either needed to sell 15 or not register some in the squad. We have a few surplus to requirement not 15.
There is a regulation that caps wage bill plus agents fees plus transfer fees to 85% of revenue, that’s in addition to PSR which limits losses in a three year period. So keeping the wage bill in check is important.
If you let a highly paid player go on 50% subsidised wages you’re still saving 50 grand plus per week on wages. You may end up in a position where you either have to do that or face sanctions.
I do not know how close to or how far from that situation we are.
Thanks for a sensible response Mr Ayris.
ps/ are you really THE Johnny Ayris.
Not the man himself but you’ve guessed where the name comes from. There’s also a Dudley Tyler posting here… Wonderful stuff.
Yes, and a couple of points. The European rules (if you have an eye on Europe) are stricter and PL rules are moving in that direction. Going forward the rules are likely to be regulations that will eventually limit clubs to only spend 70 per cent of revenue on transfer fees, player wages and so on. On Chelsea having fifteen players to shift that isn’t because they have fifteen players with dodgy knees or players on high wages funding hair transplants. Their game had been, and is, to warehouse talent and make a return on the investment. How they painted themselves into a corner of needing to shift so many players in such a short time is odd. Either they did not allow for the impact that PSR would have in clubs ability to but those investment players or my bet they think that sone high priced lawyers (together with the support of other well heeled clubs) may be able to get PSR removed as a constraint on trade or something.
I think it came as a shock to all when Everton and Forest had points deducted, both might have been relegated as a result of that. I think that woke people up to the fact that PSR has teeth and we’re still seeing the repercussions of that.
There may well be another wave of it with the Man City outcome when it comes. Man City had a legal case on something finances related running with the authorities recently, probably still running I’ve heard nothing more. You’re thinking along the right lines with regard to possible actions…
Maybe try the “buy one, get one free!” mantra?
If that’s the cost of doing business to enable these players with no immediate West Ham future to leave the club, then so be it! Only 3 days to go to achieve that though otherwise they will be stuck until January at the earliest.
