Hammers enter hosting race

|

West Ham want to host the Community Shield at the start of next season.

The traditional curtain-raiser is usually held at Wembley but that is impossible at the start of the 2022/23 season because the final of the Women’s European Championships is being played.

As a result, a variety of clubs have put forward proposals to host the game, with the Hammers among them, according to The Daily Mail. West Ham don’t own the stadium but there is believed to be a desire to play a high-profile game at the London Stadium.

The game will be played on the weekend of July 30/31, with the Women’s Euros final being played on the Sunday, and the Hammers are joined by Arsenal in hoping to host the game.

Spurs’ stadium is hosting a Lady Gaga concert that weekend, meaning it is out of the running, but there remains the prospect of shifting the game from London, with Villa Park and Molineux both potential destinations for the clash between the Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners.
