Hammers eye Wolves central defender

The Hammers are reportedly checking on  Wolves’ young defender Dion Sanderson once the season resumes.

The Mail says: The 20-year old is on loan at Cardiff City and has been impressing manager Neil Harris prior to the Championship’s lockdown.

Scouts from Aston VillaBrighton and Norwich have also checked on his progress as they ponder a summer bid, believing Wolves will listen to offers.

Sanderson is a centre back but has been playing at right-back. He made his debut for Wolves in the Carabao Cup against Villa in October.

At Cardiff,  Sanderson made his league debut up against Nottingham Forest and, though his side lost 1-0, acquitted himself well against the threat of Sammy Ameobi and Joe Lolley.

He followed up with another strong performance as Cardiff drew 2-2 with Brentford. the Carabao Cup against Villa in October.

ClaretandHugh says: All reports of this nature can be taken with a larger pinch of salt than usual given the circumstances currently surrounding the game and the nation. We will inevitably be linked with any number of players as the season hopefully the season becomes more of a reality. However, there seems little doubt that the Hammers are looking for younger legs in central defence where Oggy is now 31 years old, Winston Reid look very unlikely to return to first team action and Fabian Balbuena has shown no real form throughout the current campaign. Whether Sanderson will prove a serious target rests entirely in the province of David Moyes who has regularly declared that young Championship and young PL players is a preferred way forward. As mentioned regularly in the past, with revenue streams now having seized up, clubs will need to be looking at the best young talent around at more sensible prices.
