West Ham flying high | The ‘forgotten’ £35 million transfer fee

Despite concerns over a lack of transfer activity in the recent window, the ‘forgotten’ payment of £35m to complete the signing of Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice propelled West Ham to a high-flying fourth place in the Premier League spending  table.

Matheus Cunha’s £62.5m switch from Wolves to Manchester United is the most expensive deal followed by Tijani Reijnders (£46.3m) joining Manchester City from AC Milan and Rayan Ait Nouri (£36m), following him to the Etihad Stadium from Olympique Lyon.

West Ham’s only other two signings thus far are nineteen year old striker Daniel Cummings, who will officially join the club on the 1st July having signed a four year deal. Celtic will receive a reported £250k fee.
And Mohamadou Kante who technically joined last August and will link up with the West Ham squad after spending last season on loan to Paris FC. He only made six senior appearances for the French side, so it is more likely he will feature for the Academy team.
With the window set to reopen on 16th June activity is expected to intensify.
Regarding departures, Mohammed Kudus could leave if West Ham’s valuation can be met.
Kyle McCaulay has a long list of targets, with a number of reports suggesting that Argentinian centre back Kevin Lomanaco is keen to join and West Ham are working on a deal to bring the South American to the East End of London. Crystal Palace have also registered their interest – so it will be interesting to see who wins the tug of war for his signature.
It seems likely that more and more of the Hammers deals will be structured over several years, with the Todibo model serving as a blueprint for spreading player costs and easing cash flow challenges.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

It’s hardly worth celebrating is it?

We have wasted money on yet another centre back that appears to be poor.

    Good old West Ham!!!

We will be in the same position as last season if we don’t step up our recruitment and start signing new players. If we have the same players as last season we will be relegated no doubt about that the owners need to put their hands in their pockets and invest some money in the club to get signings brought in asap as we all know that won’t happen the players we are hoping to sell apart from kudus are either no use to other clubs and we are stuck with them or clubs that may be interested in signing them are going to wait until near the end of the window to try and get them on the cheap no matter how it works out the club needs to get signings sorted ASAP if not then championship football will be on the card for the following season

Spot the mistake in this sentence.

Forgotten? Every club buys pays with buy now pay later.

Cash flow problems could be resolved if the shareholders put their hand in their pocket. They won’t. They have no interest in helping the club progress with their money.claret and Hugh please tell your masters to sell up

Let’s hope Todibo performs better than last season because from what I’ve seen he’s not worth 35 million.

I thought we always signed younger key players on a five year contract. Older players we get get on shorter contract. Players like Kudus and Paqueta would have been five year contracts. The longest we’ve done was wan bissaker on a 7 year deal but there was a player who was proven in the premier league over many years so a lower risk signing.
