Hammers grab Cup victory

West Ham United women’s team came from behind to start their Continental Tyres League Cup campaign with a victory, beating Charlton Athletic 2-1 at Chigwell Construction Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Carla Humphrey opened the scoring on 20 minutes, squeezing the ball beyond Megan Walsh to give the Addicks an early lead.

The Hammers rallied in the second half, with Emma Harries notching her first goal in Claret and Blue just before the hour mark when she stabbed the ball home.

In wet and windy conditions, the Hammers found a way to come out with the points and make a winning start to Group E, as Izzy Atkinson unleashed a superb strike after driving into space to put them ahead.

Boss Rehanne Skinner afterwards: “Tonight’s game gave us challenges to solve. It was a great opportunity to have everybody in the squad taking part and getting some minutes.

It was a good test, Charlton gave us a really good battle today, and I was pleased with the resilience and the character in the team to come back from behind and go on and win the game.

Again, our finishers had an impact coming onto the pitch and that’s what we need the whole squad to do for us.”
