Hammers held in frustrating draw

|

West Ham were held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton on Sunday in a game that the Hammers really should have won.

The Irons were dominant throughout the second half but were unable to find a way to win the game, after Declan Rice had equalised following Romain Perraud’s opener.

Saints took the lead through Perraud after 20 minutes, in a goal that was mired in controversy. Not only did the referee appear to get in Jarrod Bowen’s way before Perraud hit his shot, there was a foul throw in the build-up.

Still, the full-back took aim from range and it deflected into Lukasz Fabianski’s bottom corner.

The Irons had numerous chances to level things up before half-time, as Gianluca Scamacca repeatedly went close, and Lucas Paqueta sent a header just wide of the post.

Fabianski did have to deny both Che Adams and Mohamed Elyounoussi but the Irons were well on top going into the break.

Rice scored just after the hour, following some intense pressure from the Hammers. A give and go with substitute Said Benrahma led to Rice curling an effort into the back of the net from just outside the box.

Bowen appealed for a penalty after Mohamed Salisu looked to handle the ball in the area, but nothing was given.

The Irons continued to press for a winner but they simply couldn’t find a way through the organised Saints backline, with Scamacca again guilty of missing a big chance after being slipped in down the left wing.

It’s a point, but it really feels like it should have been three.
