Hammers hold on for priceless victory

West Ham held on to record a vital 1-0 win over Wolves at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The Hammers came into the game knowing that defeat was not really an option, such was their precarious position in the league table.

Wolves started the game just two points behind the Irons and with a game in hand, so there was no room for error at the London Stadium.

And the Irons did manage to secure all three points thanks to Tomas Soucek’s strike, although it was something of a nervous finish to Sunday’s encounter as Wolves began to dominate possession; they were unable, though, to break down the resolute Irons backline.

The game took some time to get going, perhaps with both sides aware of what was at stake, but the Hammers grew into the game after around 20 minutes, as both Mikey Antonio and Aaron Cresswell went close.

It was Declan Rice who went closest in the first half, though, as his whipped 25-yard effort clattered against the post.

Wolves could have had the lead at half-time as Hwang Hee-Chan had a huge chance to shoot from just inside the box, but he couldn’t wrap his foot around the ball, and it flew wide.

It was Soucek who scored the winner on 58 minutes, as he stretched to poke home Antonio’s excellent cut-back after some fine work between the Jamaica international and Cresswell on the left flank.

Fabio Silva had a couple of efforts that did not trouble Lukasz Fabianski before Jarrod Bowen was given a golden chance to kill the game off, being sent through one-on-one down the right flank, although his shot was weak and well-saved.

Wolves tried to go for it in the final few minutes, bringing on Raul Jimenez up front as well as Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto, but they couldn’t find a way through.

Three priceless points for the Hammers.
