There is a consistent theme developing as the narrative of the transfer windows starts to unfold. More and more of the linked players which West Ham are looking at are in their late teens and early twenties. A reaction to the criticism of older players brought in during the last few windows? Maybe.
A financial necessity? Surely.
A need to reduce the average age of the squad? Definitely. A desire to invest more wisely and turn around the Hammers’ from a ‘spending’ club to a ‘trading’ club- hopefully.
The Hammers are seventh in the spending list of Premier League clubs – check out the league table below (Transfermarkt)- with over £730 million spent on players -and yet still have one of the oldest squads in the PL.

Clearly what is needed is more spending on players on the way up rather than expensive players just past the pinnacle: In that vein the report this evening from getfootbnallnewsfrance.com confirms the Irons are in the mix for Rangers’ 22 year old striker Hamza Igamane who has rattled a few cages with his 16 goals and 3 assists in the SPL.
Lens, Lille, Rennes and Strasbourg along with Everton and Brentford share the interest in the young Moroccan so it’ll be a tough ask to bring Igamane to London.
The constant links with young, up and coming players whose value will rise is more suggestive of the ‘Mohammed Kudus‘ financial model ( double your money) rather than the James Ward-Prowse variant (overpay and lose millions).
Hopefully the Hammers will succeed in getting some of these ‘young guns’ deals over the line during the second window and give Potter a more mobile, pacy team to begin the next PL season in August.
Buying young up and coming players is the approach of quite a few teams now. Good idea of course, mixed in with more experienced/accomplished players. I think must be a result of PSR too, which limits outgoings according to income (it seems?). Does not create spending equality between big/medium/smaller clubs. Presumably Academy players will become more important due to PSR, I guess?
Hope WHU get some of the younger talent mentioned in all the articles to complement the better players in our squad. Still believe, if we keep the right players (each to his own, but Paqueta for sure!!😁 ) we could have a potent squad, especially with some Academy players who could bring real excitement to our play as they grow into the team over a few seasons.
Have to congratulate WHU on the Academy success rate and this could really help the club in the future. More Academy players must make it into the 1st team though. So far only Scarles has worthwhile appearances – brilliant for the lad, but in itself definitely not enough. With the lads coming back from on loan, IF they get the mix right, I’m looking forward to all this coming together for next season. It could be dicey, but exciting and I would love to see good football on the pitch showing talent, endeavour & resilience.
This just proves that Sullivan doesn’t know what he’s doing with his scattergun approach? I personally feel that WEST HAM UNITED will never be a top six club while he’s involved? He promised champions league football within 5 years and hasn’t ever backed up his claims with investment in the team! It’s all smoke and mirrors and ducking and diving with Sullivan! If WEST HAM want to be taken seriously they need to change the way they operate! Several premier league teams with less resources are run so much better and it’s time for SULLIVAN to leave or stand down he is holding west ham back!!!
Is he a freebie and if not for get about it as usual there is no money to spend
Makes financial sense to sign younger up and coming players on longer contracts to spread the payments with the benefit of them hopefully going up in value.
Why does this site keep pushing stories that are pure rubbish.
Its mid June and we have signed nothing, your sources are embarassing!
Wait for correct information please.
