Pre-season “exhibition” games usually tell you very little – the match against Perth |Glory earlier was different!
The reason? Our youngsters showed again that West Ham is becoming the academy club for which is has been famous in past decades.
Fair play to David Moyes in giving five of them the chance to show us what they had got and with Freddie Potts and Dan Chesters leading the way things look very good indeed.
The arrival of George Earthy and Divin Mubama in the second half demonstrated again just what a promising period is in front of the Hammers.
They all played a part in the Youth Cup victory at Arsenal and today were bang at the centre of the action as soon as they appeared.
Mubama looks more than ready, scoring one goal from close in and all but adding a second with a great placed shot to the top corner which brought a fabulous save from the Perth keeper.
Kid Potts was excellent for the Hammers
Potts at defensive midfield was excellent with Chesters, down the right, creating a series of menacing moments and being denied a goal within a minute only by a defensive deflection.
Earthy – as was the case in the win over Arsenal in the Youth cap – looks exciting on the ball and one to look forward to over the coming months.
Potts looks a player well worth his new three year contract and a lad who ciould follow his legendary hammers Dad Steve into the first team.
A good day to be a Hammer!
What you want to see from the next generation, is an evolution from the current generation, and I think we saw that today. Potts was assured and classy. Chesters was industrious and exciting, with an end product. Earthy looks to have some skills and eagerness to win the ball back. Mubama looks exciting and strong.
If these boys came in for Soucek, Coufal, Bennie and Antonio respectively, I think we’d do okay. 🙂
A word for Fornals as well, who I thought was exceptional today, with his work rate and distribution. He is SO much better in the middle of the park than on the wing, and I think deserves to try and cement his place there, alongside or in competition with the impressive Downes.
It was also nice to see us productive while playing two up front. Will Moyes take note?
