Hammers leading Spurs in transfer race

West Ham are leading the race to sign Sam Johnstone from West Brom, according to The Sun’s print edition on Sunday.

The Hammers were heavily linked with a potential swoop to sign the goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.

BBC reported that the Irons tabled a bid worth £10m for the England international, only for West Brom to reject the offer and opt to keep the stopper.

Johnstone now has a contract that runs until the end of the season and he could potentially leave on a free once the campaign is over.

The Sun reports that Spurs are also in the hunt to sign the 28-year-old, but that the Irons are the team currently leading the race.

It’s an interesting report, especially when one considers that the Hammers eventually signed Alphonse Areola on loan from PSG in the summer, but it may be a part of succession planning for the eventual departure of Lukasz Fabianski.
