Hammers line up Clarke alternative if deal falls through
West Ham are closely watching the Jonathan Rowe at Norwich City, according to the Evening Standard. The Hammers are keeping a close eye on the forward, who has had a breakout campaign at Carrow Road. The Irons hierarchy have asked to be kept infomed of any bids for Rowe in order to avoid missing out on the transfer.
Eager to fulfil their requirements for home-grown players in the Premier League squad, West Ham see Rowe as a potential solution. However, their interest in the player might be contingent on the future of Jack Clarke at Sunderland.
Reports suggest that any potential deal for the Sunderland winger is unlikely to materialise until the summer due to the club’s high asking price.
Rowe, at just 20 years old, has had an impressive breakthrough season at Norwich, emerging as a key figure under manager David Wagner. Having featured in 24 of the team’s opening 26 league games, Rowe has contributed 10 goals and two assists, making him the top goal scorer for Norwich as they aim for promotion to the Premier League. His progress last season was halted by an ankle injury.
However, he has hit the ground running this term. Rowe has been described by some as the best attacker outside the EPL.
Despite Norwich’s underwhelming results, Rowe’s individual performance has attracted attention from top-flight clubs, including West Ham. The player, who recently earned a call-up to England’s U21s, has become a promising talent in the eyes of several clubs in the Premier League.
Norwich would look to demand a minimum £20million for Rowe if they decided to sell.
