Being dubbed the ‘next N’Golo Kante’ is a serious label to have to live upto: The young Reims midfielder in question appears to be taking all of the hype in his stride as he is the subject this weekend of reports about Premier League interest from West Ham.

As is the way of business in the transfer window, Leeds, Burnley, Crystal Palace and Everton – always Everton with any West Ham ‘link’ – are also reported as keeping tabs on teenage defensive midfielder Valentin Atangana. Reims’ recent relegation means they are willing reportedly to cash in on their teen talent’s £9 million estimated value.

So if nothing else, his value is right on the money for a West Ham side strapped for cash.

Back in the winter of 2024 the youngster was linked with no less than 24 top tier clubs so it does seem an unlikely battle for the Hammers to enter, let alone think about winning.

Givemesport.com do suggest that:

“Leeds are at risk of facing stiff competition from Premier League rivals as GMS sources have learned that West Ham United and Burnley are also keen on Atangana, while Crystal Palace and Everton have asked to be kept in the loop over his situation as Reims go in search of finding a buyer.”

With young academy talent already at the club returning from championship loans last year, it seems an unlikely step for West Ham to take to bring another Freddie Potts -style talent in when Potts, Earthy, Orford and co already fill up the quota of ‘young guns’ in midfield. With limited funds you’d expect the Hammers to go for first team ‘oven ready’ replacements for Soler, Rodriguez or Alvarez rather than another teen for the future. There’s plenty of them already getting ready for pre-season.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.
