Hammers look at striker market

West Ham are looking to bring in a striker before the window slaps shut although there are claims from an insider well known to ClaretandHugh that the manager has the squad he wants.

However, although no names have been leaked at this stage, with around just £10 million available, the club realise they have little chance of signing a top level striker and are looking at a possible loan deal instead.

The club has considered Danny Welbeck as a possible signing but personal terms well in advance of £100k a week quickly saw an end to that.

And with Rangers wanting around £15-20 million for Alfredo Morelos we have had to look elsewhere with the loan market possibly offering better options.

Our insider told us by e mail: “The manager is essentially happy with the squad  but were a good loan striker become available we would be interested.

“Top strikers don’t want to spend time on the bench and with Haller now in the squad the position is complicated from that perspective.”

  1. Llorente makes more sense. Not injury prone, plays a similar style to Haller and probably won’t want more than a one year deal. Despite the Spurs connection and his age, I think he would make the most sense, plus it would be nice to have back up that is actually fit to play.

  2. I can’t believe that Pelle is happy to keep Hernandez. He had little effect last season and won’t again this.We know what Rangers want for Morelos but have we made an offer? With Obiang going and Hugill going and Cullen probably going,if we sell Hernandez as well surely we would have sufficient to negotiate with Rangers, after all they don’t really want to keep him.

  3. Why aren’t we getting in on the act of the Spanish and Italian clubs and looking into young talent in places like South America for young strikers keen to make a name? Maxi Gomez is a great example of a player picked up for £4 million and sold on to mugs like us for mega money. Alternatively I would love to see us promote xande silva or another youth striker to the first team. Silva is raw but if we’re not going to loan him out then save our money and play the kids. How is it quina gets games at Watford and looks good but he can’t squeeze out of the under 23’s here and gets sold on for a poultry £1 million?

    • Agree Jamie I’d like to see Husillos dip back Into Brazilian mkt & Liga MX Argentina great players. I like the Edaon Alveraz link Like Christian Calderon for LB . For CF I really like Jose Macias at Leon in Liga MX only 19 he got 10 goals in 18 18/19 & for 19/20 just started as 2 Iin 2. Also at Fluminense Iove Pedro (not Joao Pedro that Watford bought tho he is great) but couple years older just 22 few weeks ago. He scored 5 goals in 7 for 2019 Serie A so far, fro 2018 he had 10 goals in 19 if count Cariaco he had 7 in 13 2018. He is 6’1 strong quick well rounded CF who can lead the line. He’d probably be easier to get in January when season is off but even then if could work a deal now to get in January that would be good business imo. Before big clubs start coming in with offers don’t think could get for £4m maybe £10-12m with add ons but worth it & if set for Jan in another year.
Jose Macias we could get for less more raw but huge talent. Love to see us got back into South America is a lot of Talent & Liga MX isn’t easy & Brazil’s Serie A is physical like PL.

      • Perhaps it’s work permits that don’t allow us to raid the South American leagues. I don’t know the situation in Italy and Spain but I would imagine it’s easier (particularly in Spain) as lots of South Americans speak Spanish so there’s no language barrier. Not sure what the governments stance on South American players is but considering how many are in that league, I can’t imagine it’s anywhere near as difficult as the UK. Shame because there’s so much talent out there. That said, the prices would sharply rise if the Premier League clubs could start shopping there regularly.

  4. It was only last week that Costa and Ballateli where being talked about along with Sturidge.
But then again 24 hours is a long time in rummers
In pello we must trust, no complaints in what’s his down so far.

  5. What about Xande Silva.Do you think he could step up ?

  6. I find this hard to believe that Pelle is happy with his squad, no left back, no right winger and no replacement for Arnie. Someone is having a laugh and it is certainly not the West Ham fans. Lets be creative Rice can play CH so invest in a top CM (box to box) and buy a wide player who can play up top. Two players will in fact cover two positions. Now they must be quality. With 10m coming in for Hugill and Obiang lets do some clever business, with all the scouting we did at the Copa America something must have appeared. We need two players here and ideally a left back. I think Pelle has a great rep which attracts players but he has learned no lessons from last season, poor at LB, poor in CM and Hernandez cant cut it as a lone striker. Wilshere a total waste of time. He has not done anything to rectify these and therefore I fear we are going to be found out.

    • Erm did you miss the Haller signing which replaced Arnie? Also it’s all well and good buying a left back but until we offload either of our current options we can’t just go a sign another. No West Ham fan can say we don’t have a better squad than we did last year, we had a lot of injuries last year and kept so many players out for long periods of the season. In Pelle we must trust! COYI

  7. We cannot go into a season hoping for a top 6 finish with one striker backed up by another who is often moody & past his prime and a third who is essentially an enigmatic winger at best (Antonio).

Heaven forbid that striker number 1 gets injured, and it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had such luck after all.

Issues in the defensive midfield department and at left back mean reinforcements are required, and personally I’d dispatch Masuaku & Sanchez. (Former- defensive abilities, temperament – latter plainly lacks ability at this level).

There may be a lack of ready cash to make large outright purchases, but there’s certainly scope for additions in the wage budget way I see it following the departures.

I don’t believe the manager is fully satisfied – just that he’s keeping his cards close to his chest right now.

  8. I can’t believe we haven’t done something at he back.
One of the worst defensive records in the league for the last two years and he is still messing around with the two worst left backs in the league and Zaba’s legs have long gone.
Hopefully Johnson can play a couple but he’s so young.
We are so desperate for a good left back it beggars belief we haven’t got anyone in my view.
We won’t score 3 a game but we will need to with our defence.

    • I agree. It’s the defence that let’s us down. Our full backs aren’t good enough (defensively, at least) and Ogbonna is unreliable, although I’d like to think that Reid can get back to his best.

      • Yea there has to be a way tho. I mean Richarlison Watford got for Cheap & got him a permit right away. I was surprised how fast they for his permit.
It is easier for Spain & Italy Netherlands etc to get South American players. On that Villa got Wesley a Permit & he barely played in Brazil league. They think they can get one for Douglas Luiz who Pep bought 2 years ago & spent both seasons at Girona bc couldn’t get Permit was supposed to be Dhino cover. *** I do know be over 21 helps like with Balbuena when we got him he hadn’t player for Paraguay in around 2 years. They look at Intl duty especially w U21 but then they looks at do you play so much for you club over 50% or something helps & iin cups like Copa Libatores etc which Pedro has. Macias at 19 would be harder to get. Yes England is hardest to get Foreign players in bc some rules & Brexit stuff. Scotland is easier I believe Morelos had no issues at 20 for move. Didn’t use to be this hard but its hard for us to get any foreign players from Africa see issues a lot. Everton looking at Wingers & CFs & they have Henry Onyekuru who we where linked with & I wanted £5-6m killed it at Eupen before move at 18-19 th en was grwat at loam for Anderlecht got injury. Then his loam to Galatasary he won title was their top scorer & only behind assists in Feghouli one player I wish we didn’t let go didn’t make sense was great for Algeria too we sold for €4m but still had to pay €3m sign on Bonus we owed bc had €4.5m sign on & they said bc wages but was in £40k £65k w Bonus. Great attitude hard worked did well for us 4&5 in 21 most not started won last game for UA w goals & assist think MP would or loved him technical versatile RW #10 Mid 3 #8… Got carried away but Henry O is sure they could get Permit now but they forget about him.
*Don’t know how but some clubs seem to do it with no issue like Watford & Villa now tho Wesley is 22 so that’s a reason never played for Int’l senior squad. But Richarlison was 19.
I like a mix & so expensive to buy in PL Depth at £8-9m was a deal. Another young CF I like Badou at AZ is a beast but only 19 so be jars to get permit too probably.
Really worried about CM/DM more & Eeick Pulgar is the one Chilean player in Mid that isn’t over 30 & be great beside Rice goals passing physical technical €10m buyout 25yo. Low wages the €8m sold Obaing add €2m we her a Much better player & would for in with squad & staff 6 goals 3 assists some dead ball goals moss those.
Or Ellyes Shkiri 1 year left at Montpellier had 3 great seaosns 24yo 6’1 CM/DM & CB & RB cover long range goals lasainf tackling well rounded Tunisia regialr caps. Koln offered €5m & they will accept rho he’d prefer move to Serie A Fiorentina & haabeen open to PL. Match €5m or lil more done . Linked w Sidibe for RB & I’d like a RB who can cover LB too. But a a Mid like Shkiri who can do irt he is like Alveraz who we bid for & unlike but went to AJAX.
MP supposedly doesn’t like Loans but maybe we could get one w option for CF or LB RB & buy Rounded Mid for cheap then be ready for best season to crack top 6 since we moved. Ramble over!

  9. Johnham tell us who you think would be a replacement for Arnie.

  10. Always hear we could look a t loan this summer & last but also read & hear from others Pellegrini isn’t a fan of loans. Which I can understand if dry loan no option but if option to buy why not! Try before you buy. We could of for a better player then Sanchez on loan who I don’t trust as DM no one will one will take on £75k year left he is 5th choice CB at best imo. ** We need a CM/DM imo more then another CF I’d like both & a LB who can cover RB top was some good frees missed on tbh I’d take Filip Luis yes 33-34 but great last seaosn if lowered wages I’d take for season but prob go to Flamnego.
But that’s not point Erick Pulgar finally linked with which hopefully is on Husillos list w MPs love for Chilean players talked about Leverkusen Angaruiz turning us down linked Medel & Maripan who is too slow imo. Pulgar with an only €10m buyout clause got interest from Roma Atalanta & other Serie A sides. Bologna will lose him at that price anyway he is Chilean & w sell of Obaing cost us €2-3m which is less then Sanchez cost. At 25 & 6’2 he is exactly what we need : He is enfrocer played half DM half CM last season w 7+ rating over all, he is all action will protect back w Rice thru tackles , Blocks, interceptioms all which he excels at. Break the play then move fwd w great damage of passomf think 84% passing acc not bad be better w better players, sets tempo then he chips in goals w 6 last season & 3 assists he is a threat from set pieces whether taking which he scored 2 dead ball goals , long range from open play, deliver a nice set piece & threat on other end w Headers. Also wins a lot of air duels & is good defending against set prices as well.
Wilshere injuries looks good but not best defender, Noble is still great but think he is better getting fwd & is 32. Not to mention if Rice was injured we would be in trouble. For me we wnates Jordan who I like but Pulgar is mobile too more physical suited to PL IMO & is a bargain. Him & Rice together would allow our fwd plays to focus more on creating & goals but Pulgar would Alps help love play as well as protect & chip in some goals & we could use some from mid miis a dead ball goal too!
No-Brainer for me. Yes we spent a lot but sold some players & could sell some like Browne which I hope not was very good nairher loan if not play is value will rise m sell Sead who is struggling on £18k & only came bc part of Arnie’s deal.
Or David’s loan a bit bc this is best season to crack top 6 since Upton Park withan U Arsenal & Chelsea’s issues tho the last 2 especially have good squads Chelsea the most & Arsenal in attack. Leicester are ready £80m &,not done. We need to be matching them. And maybe try to sell for more Byram Injuries yes but I like him not even £1m & now Cullen could to for £1m he is worth at lest £3m a lot pundits said he was best deep lying mid in League 1 & 9 assists 3 goals whenu see Luton sold Jmaes Justin for £8-£10m which he is worth it would of loved him same number assists & goals as Cullen at Inverted LB then RB &I’d too plays off ground would of walked in our LB spot.
Browne what we get £2m send on loan to Championship club & of he does it again like Oxford worth £8-10m.

  11. I also think that another forward is essential. Hernandez is hopeless and should be sold asap. This would bolster the funds and allow us to look for a half decent striker. Also, we should try to get the 4m defender to fill th LB void

  12. If Pelle is not going to get a good defensive midfielder, left back & a striker, cannot understand why he wants to keep Hernandez he is getting older & slower, what was the point of signing Fornais & spending all that money on Haller we will still have last years defensive problems
