Hammers looking for another United win

Stats across BBC, Opta and Talk Sport demonstrate that and also show that Manchester United have secured just  two wins in their last six Premier League visits (D1 L3). Both victories occurred under the ill-fated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 campaigns.

United have managed just two wins In their last 12 Premier League matches in London, Manchester  (D3 L7), both against Fulham in November 2022 and November of the current season.

Since David Moyes’ return to West Ham in the 2019-20 season, the Hammers have struggled against teams that finished in the top four the previous season, winning only three out of 31 matches (D5 L23). Notably, they haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of these games, with all three victories secured with a 3-2 scoreline.

Both West Ham and Manchester United rank high in shots faced in the Premier League this season, with 271 shots each—only Sheffield United and Luton facing more. This season marks Manchester United’s highest shots faced per game (15.9) since 2003-04 and West Ham’s highest since 2013-14 (17.8 per game that season).

Manchester United has struggled to find the back of the net, failing to score in three out of four Premier League matches in December. This represents their highest number of goalless games in a single month since January 2020 (also three). In 2023, they have failed to score in 11 games, surpassing their total for any calendar year since 2015 (12).

The Mancs have already suffered 12 losses in all competitions this season, a figure not surpassed before Christmas since 1930-31 when they lost 16 games, finishing at the bottom of the top-flight that season.

In West Ham’s recent 3-0 victory over Wolves, Lucas Paquetá played a pivotal role, assisting all three goals. This performance equaled his total assists in 28 games from the previous season, and he also created six chances in open play—a feat not seen from a Hammers player since Mauro Zárate (remember him?) against Stoke in December 2015 (7 chances).

Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United leads the Premier League in chances created in 2023, setting a record for a Red Devils player in a calendar year (126 chances). He also tops the list for open play chances created (96), with only Mesut Özil in 2015 (104) and Eden Hazard in 2015 (98) surpassing him in a single year since 2004.
