Hammers looking to bolster with Alvarez back-up
West Ham have reportedly shown interest in securing the services of Sassuolo’s midfielder, Daniel Boloca, during the upcoming January transfer window.
According to a report from Tuttosport, the Hammers are eager to acquire the 24-year-old midfielder, but it remains to be seen whether they can come to an agreement with his current club. West Ham have a decent relationship with Sassuolo, established through the purchase of Gianluca Scamacca.
Boloca possesses versatility, capable of playing both as a central defender and a defensive midfielder. His addition would bolster David Moyes‘ defensive options. In many aspects, his skill set mirrors that of Edson Alvarez, suggesting that this signing may primarily serve as a backup player.
Boloca began his career at Juventus as a youth player, but has played mainly in Serie B. Born in Italy, Boloca has chosen to represent Romania and has one international cap.
Whilst it might be tempting to dismiss this rumour, West Ham have heavily relied on Alvarez this season due to his specialised defensive abilities. With Alvarez set to miss an upcoming weekend game against Brentford due to suspension, it will test the team’s ability to cope without him.
Although we have alternative options, the squad appears somewhat thin, with Flynn Downes on loan at Southampton, Freddie Potts at Wycombe, and Conor Coventry seemingly not in Moyes’ favour.
Weren’t we told a little while back that there was no money for January signings?
