West Ham United are facing another dose of transfer market regret as Ronnie Edwards, a defender they were previously interested in, signed for Southampton, according to BBC Sport.

The 21-year-old centre-back has joined the Saints from Peterborough United for a reported initial fee of £3 million.
West Ham reportedly had the chance to sign Edwards in January but negotiations stalled due to a disagreement over his valuation, which was around £4.5 million at the time.

The central defender has been offered to West Ham on countless occasions with Barry Fry contacting David Sullivan directly regarding the player.

With over 140 senior appearances under his belt, a strong Championship record, and experience with England’s youth teams, Edwards is a player with significant potential.

Southampton’s decisiveness has paid off. They’ve secured a talented young defender who strengthens their defence in the short term and represents a promising long-term investment.

West Ham’s need for a young, capable centre-back was clear, especially considering their aging defence and ongoing injury problems. His ability to read the game, distribute well, and excel in one-on-one situations would have addressed some of West Ham’s defensive struggles last season.

Edwards’ potential to develop into a top Premier League player shouldn’t be ignored. West Ham, known for their focus on young talent, might rue missing out on him, particularly in light of their usual transfer strategy.

Southampton’s proactive approach secured them a promising player at a reasonable price. In contrast, West Ham’s agreement with Wolves for Max Kilman means central defence is slightly less of a concern now.

Not sure we’ve missed out. At that price we could have easily signed him IF we wanted him. We obviously decided that we have better options

Seen him play….average at best in league 1.

    Sullivan and Brady strike again

I’d hardly say we’d lost out, someone we might have been interested in six months ago at a lower price. Probably not even been thought about since.
