Southampton are reportedly interested in bringing their former striker Danny Ings back to the club, according to The Daily Echo. The 31-year-old spent three successful seasons at St Mary’s between 2018 and 2021, scoring 46 goals in 100 appearances.
Ings’ departure for Aston Villa in 2021 for a hefty £30 million fee was met with controversy amongst Southampton fans.
His time at Villa Park proved less fruitful, managing only three goals in 37 appearances across all competitions. A subsequent move to West Ham yielded even fewer goals, with Ings starting just seven Premier League matches.
The Daily Echo also reports that Southampton are willing to offer a cut-price deal of £6 million to re-sign Ings. The striker himself is said to be weighing his options before making a decision.
His wages of £125,000 per week may prove a hurdle but it would be best for both parties if a deal could be completed.
Ings is a proven goal scorer but for a variety of reasons he never really fired for the Irons.
Paper talk and agent hype trying to find his next move, Southampton fans don’t want him back and for good reasons
Danny Ings never threw his toys out the cot and seems like a good pro. I still feel that his two goals against Forest were crucial in our moving away from a longer relegation battle. He played well this season against Sheffield United and Burnley. Let him move on with our good wishes – we don’t need to refer to him as a “misfit”
Yes we need more talent not someone passed their best
If we are going to survive we need to splash the cash on a talented striker
I see Ings often described as a bad signing, misfit etc. He’s a journeyman who done a good job for us. If anyone expected he’d score 20 goals a season for us then they need a lobotomy. Moyes system didn’t suit Ings but does it suit any striker? It’s a thankless task and he applied himself well when called upon.
And Julen Lopetegui won’t keep just any old Iron. He’s keeping one that’s a bit older, i.e. Michail Antonio, because the view is that Antonio can keep opposing defenders busy. If we can actually sign a quality young striker then we can let Danny Ings go back to where he came from as a youth player, with our best wishes.
He might aswell take ward-prowse with him. That’s got to be better than leaving him on the bench week in, week out.
Why are you repeating what you said yesterday? Try and focus on quality rather than quantity
