Reportedly sailing close to the wind under Premier League financial regulations, the Hammers have no doubt pencilled-in the sale of key players this summer and the end of Danny Ings’ lucrative £125k a week contract to keep them the ‘right’ side of the line when making their bid for free agent Lille’s Angel Gomes.

Angel Gomez-West Ham-Transfer

Angel Gomes- not heading to West Ham this summer.

That headline above looks a big chunk of cash in footballer annual wages, doesn’t it. But did a bit deeper, and it shows a big reality-gap from the current financial requisite to attract Premier League prestige players.

The fact that the West Ham bid has met with a lukewarm response and a pretty quick rebuttal  from Angel Gomes’ family – his agents – shows the unrealistic expectations under which West Ham are operating.

Let me ask you – if you were worth £100k a year in a job, and somebody went through the whole selection and interview process and then put a derisory £50,000 offer to you, how would you feel? Insulted? Angry? Disillusioned and determined to get a better job elsewhere?

Yes to all. How the Hammers expected to pick up one of the hottest, most sought-after talents in world football for less than the wages they’ve paid Danny Ings for three years is beyond me. Whilst the Hammers would like to be portrayed as ‘elite level’ players in the club big leagues, the fact that their £100k-a week offer for Angel Gomes was the best that the club can do speaks volumes. And not in a good way.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970.. Don't take my comments too seriously, imagine we are having a chat at half time over a pint at L S and "let's disagree without falling out".

No Martin, it does not. You sensationalize the headline quoting £5.2M per year but don’t bat an eyelid at £100K a week which is the same damn thing. West Ham quibble about paying the sort of money Man. Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool or City might pay for a top player and then pay £125K a week for Ings, which makes no sense at all. Gomes and others like him won’t come to West Ham because the club hierarchy has no ambition. Since Steidten left things have been comparatively dull on the transfer front.

Even if Gomes and his entourage ‘value’ his services higher than West Ham might be prepared to pay, he is still not the type of player we need to add to our squad at the moment.

There are much better players out there to suit our team.

If this is true then it is just plain dumb. Ings on his way out but also one would assume Soler on £80k. And whats going to happen with Paqueta £150k, Rodriguez £75k, Fullkrug £90k, Emerson £90k, Alvarez £100k. Gomes is a young top talent, show some ambition and stop making excuses.

Why are we even bothering to chase players like Gomes. He is a free agent who will be looking for European football not a relegation fight which is what we will be in next season. There are no goals in our current squad , our leading scorer currently has 7
We should be scouring the world for young talent

The question is, to buy a player like Gomes what is the price including wages and agent fees that you would expect to outlay ?

Then what do you think is reasonable considering he has no transfer fee ?

Seems like £5.2m would be much less than that…
