Nobody escapes criticism in the media fest that follows yesterdays 5-2 drubbing against Arsenal. Several players were woeful. Some had an off day. One report today focuses on Lucas Fabianski’s performance in between the posts and suggest that both West Ham goal keepers are below the required standard for a Premier League side.
Entitled ‘Lopetegui Must Upgrade On £185k/week Duo’ the article in givemesport.com suggests that despite trailing both Areloa and Fabianski this season, Lopetegui has failed to find either satisfactory and now “the club faces the season-defining decision of signing a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window”
Rubbish. In terms of priority, there are far more pressing issues at West Ham. Let’s face it, Alisson Becker could have been in goal yesterday against Arsenal and we’d still have lost resoundingly. It is like putting new windscreen wipers on your car when the engine just blew up. Fix the biggest issue first, don’t ignore the reality that we have the worst defensive record outside the bottom three of any Premier League club.
The report prattles on: “It was Fabianski who was given the nod in the clash with London rivals, Arsenal. However, after conceding five goals in a single half, including two penalties, the Polish shot-stopper failed to justify his selection in the team. That wasn’t the first time a West Ham goalkeeper has capitulated this season – it was initially Areola who started as the team’s number one.
During a similarly humbling loss, this time to other London rivals, Tottenham, the Frenchman had conceded four, one of those being an own goal from himself. A furious Lopetegui immediately switched his allegiance to Fabianski from then on instead, dropping Areola from the starting eleven entirely.”
Deckchairs and The Titanic springs to mind.
1/Appoint a new coach. 2/ Fix the midfield so we don’t concede so many goals. 3/ Get a new striker.
Then maybe worry about who’s standing at the back. Both are actually pretty good servants to the club. If what is in front of them is utter dross, they deserve our pity not a p45.
We do need a new keeper because Aerola is not good enough to be a number 1 and never had been and Fabianski is almost 40.
It might not be a priority right now but it needs addressing sooner rather than later.
Compared with last years drubbing by Arsenal there were moments of skill. We scored.
Mr. Moyes had no clue and would have switched our defense with our offence and played the game backwards. Fabianski as striker and Antonio between the posts…
But the comments around not being an EPL team are valid. Too old, too slow, and managed by someone who believes hope is a plan.
Both of Westham’s senior keepers are bottom six grade , however an extremely limited budget means prioritizing a new quality manager and striker . The reality is that LOSEpetegui has wrecked Westham’s season and won’t be sacked soon enough and in addition no club wants to sell its best players for cheap in the winter transfer window . Sullivan shouldn’t waste any more money on half price half dead players .
Taffy after 35 minutes yesterday in 125 minutes play at the White Elephant that is Stratford Arsenal had clocked up 10 unanswered goals. TEN NIL –
Arguably most of us have mates who are either Spurs, Chelsea or Arsenal fans – who quite rightly rip the piss out of us given our absolute battering/capitulations – These are London derbys they matter. I know some glory hunting Scousers and they also mention to the two pathetic 5-1 drubbings from our last two visits to Anfield. We are supposed to be in the same league but we are a million miles away from them.
If yesterday was everyone doing their best there is no hope,
It was only one game. The end of the world is unlikely to occur unless we have a new coach every month. This is not fantasy football or Xbox stuff. These are real people doing their best. There will be lows, exasperating lows, but there will be bright spots illuminating the way. Let us all join hands and get a result at Leicester on Tuesday. The beginning of the future.
