West Ham believe they are still in with an even money chance of signing Benfica’s Gedson Fernandes in what is set to become this window’s long running transfer saga.

It was believed yesterday that Chelsea had gazumped the Irons bid of an 18 month loan deal with an obligation to buy at £33 million by offering the same length of loan deal but with a buy price of £55 million.

Chelsea’s offer for Fernandes is dependent on the Portugal international midfielder playing at least 50 per cent of games during his loan spell at Stamford Bridge which may give the Hammers an edge as he is far more likely to become a permanent fixture in the Irons midfield.

Sky Sports News are this morning claiming  the Hammers have now launched a new bid with the player very much fancying a move to the Premier League.

With David Moyes wanting the player we have learned that the Hammers are indeed continuing to negotiate with Benfica with a source telling us by e mail: “We are still in there talking and at the moment I would say the chances are about 50/50.”

Sky add: ‘Benfica are believed to be leaning towards accepting the new deal, with the Portuguese club feeling Fernandes is more likely to maintain his value at West Ham where they feel he will get more first-team opportunities.

The club board are due to hold a board meeting on Thursday to discuss the final conditions of the proposed deal for the young midfielder.
