Striker set for big things with Championship challenge
The news of Callum Marshall signing a long-term contract at West Ham capped off an excellent day. While the story may have been overshadowed by the signing of Kalvin Phillips, it is extremely important for the club. Marshall is not only an outstanding young prospect, but he’s clearly a player on the rise.
The 19-year-old has already been capped for the Northern Ireland senior squad and is highly regarded within the Hammers academy. Unfortunately, the academy’s U23 team is about to lose a very good player, as the forward has agreed to join West Bromwich Albion for the remainder of the season. As a result, his youth team colleagues will face an even harder task winning Premier League 2.
Whilst this may be seen as bad news for the high-flying Academy team, it’s good news for Marshall and the club as a whole. To put it bluntly, the young man is too talented for youth football so needs to learn at a higher level. The young Irishman has found the current level too easy this season, consistently scoring against every opponent.
I’ll be keeping a watchful eye on his journey in the Championship. I’ll certainly not be surprised to see him featuring for West Ham next season. If the team qualifies for European competition again I can see Marshall being a valuable squad asset.
