Hammers striker ‘target’ signs new deal

Hopes that the Hammers could make a move for former Tottenham youngster Marcus Edwards have collapsed.

The now 22 year old has taken himself out of the market by signing a new deal  with Vitoria de Guimaraes, thus killing off any hopes the Hammers had of him arriving at the London Stadium.

We had been heavily linked with the player who has become a much admired prospect since arriving in Portugal and has now decided to stay in the country.

London-born Edwards, 22, has become one of the club’s top players with the new of his new deal being announced by the club last night (Thurs).

Marcus Edwards has dispelled all talk of a West Ham move by signing a new contract

Edwards has signed a three-year extension with the club, keeping him contracted until 2024, with Vitoria confirming that the player has agreed to a £45million release clause.

A club statement read: ‘Edwards is serving the second season with Vitória SC, asserting himself as one of the most influential players on the team and one of the highlights of the Liga NOS, having even integrated the pre-selection for the best 11 of the season 2019/2020.

Whether the Hammers were seriously into the player, however, is questionable as he managed just nine goals in 31 appearances last season and one from 11 this time around. The Hammers are looking essentially for a striker proven at Premier League level and Edwards  isn’t at that level right now.
