Hammers surplus for summer transfer business

Assuming Lucas Paqueta does NOT now leave for £85m this summer, West Ham should have around £85m to £125m to spend on transfers.

With no new cash injections from West Ham shareholders the transfer budget available is usually the difference between the revenue/turnover and costs/expenses.

Season Revenue Costs Surplus
2022/23 £237m £191m £46m
2021/22 £253m £187m £66m
2020/21 £193m £166m £27m
2019/20 £140m £166m -£26m
2018/19 £191m £172m £19m
2017/18 £175m £185m -£10m

Over the past the six seasons’ where West Ham accounts are available the average surplus is £20.33m but in the last two seasons when the Hammers have been in Europe it has risen to £56m with £66m surplus the last time we played in the Europa League in the 2021/2022 season.

Last season accounts will not be published until next year, but turnover is likely to reach £265m excluding the £100m profit from Declan Rice.

Costs will most likely approach £205m leaving around £60m surplus on paper.

The sale of Declan Rice will be accounted for in last season’s accounts in one hit, but the Hammers will be paid in three instalments the second of which is due in July this year worth around £30m.

Add to the budget player sales assuming Benny is sold £15m on top of Kehrer already sold for £9.5m with £500,000 likely compensation for Divin Mubama.

That would leave a summer transfer budget of around £85m or £125m if factor in the first £40m instalment of the Declan Rice money from Arsenal.

Further player sales such Flynn Downes, Nayef Aguerd, Danny Ings, Michail Antonio and/or James Ward Prowse could add more to the summer transfer pot.

Why do you throw around names of players as “further player sales” who the club have apparently no intention of selling? Just rumor-mongering with no basis in fact. Where has anyone legitimate wrote that JWP or Antonio will be sold? Even Downes is by all accounts going to get a chance to make the team this summer.
