Despite Joey O’Brien being part of the first team squad and Dan Potts being handed a year’s contract, another player is required for the position.
The current transfer ‘action’ centres on Ecuadorian international Enner Valencia and the club is hoping to tie that deal up by Wednesday the latest.
But the club are determined to ensure that another left sided defender is in place before the season starts.
The purchase of Valencia will take up much of the remaining budget for players but ClaretandHugh has learned that left back is still seen as a vulnerable area.
A Hammers source told us today: “A new left back is required as cover for Cresswell regardless of anything else. It’s an area we have to strengthen. We are vulnerable over there. “

Surely the Right Back area needs strenthening first ??
Spot on mate! If we are still weak at left back then surely we are no stronger on the right? In a perfect world we’d have two quality players for every position but we all know that can’t be the case.
Even the biggest clubs have to take a gamble on first team players not getting injured, the only difference is that at these clubs the players coming in are better and more able to play in a number of positions to a higher standard.
If we’ve just rebuffed WBA re a loan deal for Downing, why can’t he provide the left back cover? He did it enough for Liverpool.
I can see both Zarate and Valencia being played on the wings.
