Hammers to urge Mikey to say no

|

 By Dave Langton

West Ham are almost certain to urge Mikey Antonio to refuse a call-up to Jamaica at the end of next month.

The Hammers’ striker is set to be called up by the Reggae Boyz for the matches in March.

Jamaica are set to take on El Salvador, Canada, and Honduras at the end of the month but these games have next to no stakes for the team.

They cannot mathematically qualify for the 2022 World Cup, as they have won just one of their 11 fixtures in qualifying.

As a result, we understand that the Hammers will attempt to persuade Mikey that he should reject the call-up and focus on the business end of the season with the Hammers given the extraordinary agenda before us..

The club remain well in the race to qualify for the Champions League and are still in the Europa League and the FA Cup, with the fourth round clash with Southampton coming on Tuesday.

With Mikey the only senior striker in the squad, the club can ill-afford for him to be injured on international duty.

Jamaica’s games are dead rubbers and that cannot be said about any of the Hammers’ upcoming fixtures.

However, they will accept and understand any decision he makes as the striker bids to extend an international career which has been a long time in the coming!
