Conor Coventry’s agents have received a frosty response from Hammers fans after it emerged that they are attempting to break through the Hammers under 23 pay ceiling.

Reports have emerged and been confirmed to CandH that they are looking for around £5k a week if they player is to stay with the club.

The club is refusing to be bullied and is sticking by its £2.5k top salary for players at that level  as we revealed earlier on the site.

Indeed, it has been made clear by club insiders to us that should the impasse continue the club are ready to let a Tribunal fix any transfer fee for the player who has yet to make a first team appearance.

The story brought a strong response from ClaretandHugh followers with two in particular making their point in no uncertain fashion.

The first , Mr Buddy Lurve said: “Here we go again, jumped up, greedy agents. I know little about Conor  who is a promising prospect, but he is still just that – promising. Not proven, unlike Dec who had already established himself in the first team and was clearly very special.

It’s up to him, and his decision needs to be based on the career path he has set out for him at West Ham. If he doesn’t feel he’ll get the chance to impress in the first team, perhaps he’s not good enough and needs to leave.

I completely agree with the club sticking to a structure – that’s a requirement for any organisation. Some will slip through and go on to become superstars, but knee-jerk capitulations to unproven players and greedy agents isn’t the answer.”

And Stephen Bush added on the CandH website: “£2,500 a week is more than enough for a young lad like Conor what ever his ability.

“It’s the agent that need to have a good look on how his running his business. Trying to make money out of a young player’s talent will not make him any friends or attract anymore young players to his business.

It’s good West Ham United are sticking to their wage structure for young players.”
