Has Potter Pulled Off Surprise Defensive U-Turn?

It would appear that West Ham boss Graham Potter has been true to his word in his efforts to persuade one of his wantaway stars to remain at the club.

Early indications appear to suggest that rather than leaving East London in the Summer transfer window, Nayef Aguerd could be set for an extended stay.

The Moroccan central defender had informed club officials of his desire to leave following his return from a loan spell at Real Sociedad. With Potter keen to work with Aguerd—and determined to have a left-footed centre-back to suit his preferred system—the news was certainly unwelcome.

Unfortunately for Aguerd, rumoured interest from La Liga’s top clubs never materialised. West Ham’s stance never wavered. A club source told Claret & Hugh at the time: “If nobody matches our valuation, he’ll be reintegrated into the squad. The manager likes him.”

And so it has proven. Aside from tentative loan enquiries from Marseille and Roma, no serious bids have emerged, and the Hammers have now decided to keep him it seems.

Early signs from pre-season suggest Aguerd has inherited the No.5 shirt from the departed Vladimír Coufal—perhaps a sign he’s staying put?

Aguerd has the No5 on his West Ham training kit

The 29-year-old is well liked at West Ham, especially around the training ground, and there is no suggestion he has been disruptive. No doubt Graham Potter is relieved he won’t need to recruit yet another player, particularly when he already has one tailor-made for his tactical setup.

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

Started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

Give West Ham opinions on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus.

Sometimes feature on BBC Radio 5 Live and once ate a biscuit in Tony Gales shed.

Connoisseur of salted caramel doughnuts and I love a Sloppy Giuseppe pizza although I'm slightly suspicious where the name came from.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

Let’s hope he can enjoy playing for us again, him,Kilnan and Todibo are all very comfortable with the ball at their feet, add in Diouf and AWB and it looks a lot better defence than last season, if rumours are correct AWB might be getting a run out as right sided cb which might be too see if we can sell Mavropanos and have AWB as cover, then play KWP as wing back.

We still seem soft through central midfield and no signs of moves for Tyler Morton, Mateus Fernandes or Harvey Elliot instead an endless set of links to older players.

Surely we can shift JWP, Irving and Alvarez?

We must surely have the most inept transfer system in the PL

He had a good season for sociadad last season. Best defensive record in the league. He had more clean sheets than anyone else. No surprise Potter would want to keep him.

  • Timbo says:

In a back 3 he could be a real asset but will his heart be in it if the going gets tough? Would be a big tick for Potter if he manages to get the best out if him.

Almost like a „new“ signing. I hope he does stay so that Potter/board can concentrate on bringing in a midfielder or two.
