“He Was Good” West Ham Boss Defends Kilman After Defensive Nightmare

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo has jumped to the defence of Max Kilman after a difficult afternoon against Leeds United — one that saw the defender concede a penalty and face frustration from the stands.

Kilman’s performance in the FA Cup quarter-final quickly became a talking point. He gave away a second-half penalty and was fortunate not to concede one earlier, on a day that didn’t go to plan for the £40 million centre-back.

It was his first start since the FA Cup tie against Burton Albion, and with Konstantinos Mavropanos impressing, Jean-Clair Todibo maintaining form and Axel Disasi settling in well, the opportunity was there. Instead, it ended with Kilman conceding and being booed by his own fans.

Nuno stands by Kilman

However, there were points during the game where Kilman played positively, and Nuno was keen to highlight them.

“I saw a good game for Max. There was the penalty, but I think he did well. He did a lot of good things. Everyone goes through different moments, and it’s about how you react. I think Max reacted well.”

Manager response was inevitable

To be fair, you can understand the manager wanting to stick up for his player. After all, what was he supposed to say — that Max was crap and won’t play for West Ham again? Of course not.

At times, Kilman did read the game well and dealt with Leeds’ long throw-ins particularly effectively. That said, it will be hoped this is a case of the manager rebuilding a player’s confidence rather than seriously considering him for a starting role.

I thought Kilman played well and the penalty he gave away was a fraction away from being an incredible goal saving defensive action. Very unlucky unfortunately he has become a scape goat for earlier in the season bad performances from the whole team.
