West Ham have received the unofficial rubber stamp of “Here We Go” from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
Following a morning filled with rumours—ranging from the predictable to the unbelievable—the Italian journalist has now confirmed that West Ham have reached an agreement to sign goalkeeper John Victor.
Speaking on his X platform, Romano wrote: “West Ham reach verbal agreement to sign John as new goalkeeper from Botafogo. €10m package almost agreed with final details being sorted, John agreed terms and the deal is almost sealed. Documents being checked… and then, here we go.”
The news has gone down like something of a lead balloon among West Ham fans, largely due to the club pulling out of the race for Mads Hermansen and Zion Suzuki—two players widely regarded as long-term first-choice options.
The disappointment seems to stem more from what West Ham didn’t do—spending big on a proven No.1—than from the arrival of John himself. The 29-year-old Brazilian is reportedly being signed to compete with, rather than replace, Alphonse Areola, who has struggled to adapt under Graham Potter’s passing tactics.
Either way, it looks like the Hammers are set to welcome their fourth signing of the summer (and no, we’re not counting Todibo or Cummings).
Let’s hope Victor proves to be an upgrade and can settle in quickly at the London Stadium.
What price do we put on a nervous back line afraid to venture too far forward because they can’t trust their keeper and the constant nagging feeling that you need to be close to cover his mistakes? Not a positive team building move this one.
Good news he looks decent from what there is of him on YouTube and none of us really know that much about him.
Hermansen has a groin injury which can be a big problem for keepers, as for Suzuki a bit like the Palacios rumour we can’t see it happening.
I hope he proves himself the obvious choice for between the sticks. He doesnt appear to be a major upgrade but perhaps the board would rather have 2 fairly competent keepers than 1 outstanding one.
Is bringing in someone merely to challenge Areola for the no.1 spot the right choice or should we have spent the extra money now to have a clear 1st choice young solid keeper for the next 15 years?
Do we realize he only became a first choice keeper at club level a year ago Never selected for Brazil and is now 29 years old Should that tell it’s own story What with wilson signing the age of the squad will be going up not down
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. It’s not overwhelming is it.
Diouf and KWP fine, no issues there.
Wilson… Deranged.
This… Hmmmmmmmmmm.
Amazing the number of PL teams who seemed interested in John Victor, including ManU, despite ‘the’ Youtube video. Quite a few articles suggesting that his distribution isn’t shabby either. Still we’re all going to be stunned and disappointed as it’s obvious he’s another Roberto. Must be a clown. Played in a team who won their league and the Copa Liberatadores last season. Why would you pick up a player like that when you could buy a keeper who played for a relegated side and conceded 72 goals but has a better YT video? And who is at least three times more expensive. Or a keeper who would have brought us Asian fans. After all that’s a big thing for Hammers fans. More tourists at home games.
Well this is one West Ham fan who is not upset by this….and a bigger price does not mean that the player is any better than either of the other two GK been linked with…to much being made of a mistake made in a recent game would you expect the other keepers to be mistake free? so before rubbishing this player lets see with our own eyes eh and not youtubes
Spot on….Manure paid a fortune for their keeper and l wouldn’t play him in my old Sunday side…..!
Pat, with a common sense approach like that are you sure you are in the right place 😂.
Totally agree though, let’s reserve judgement until we see what he does when he is wearing the shirt.
Money spent to late to change things once on the pitch Steve 1 Let’s hope the boards got this one right mate and imn wrong
Heard that we could have signed Aaron Ramsdale but he heard the West Ham fans didn’t want him and had labelled him the relegator. Made him think if he came to West Ham he might get relegated. Turns out he might have been right.
In East London’s claret and blue, Lucas Paquetá found a mate true. John Victor, Brazil’s keeper bold, Joins the Hammers, a story to be told.
With flair and skill, they’ll dance on the pitch, Paquetá’s magic, Victor’s save-rich. From Rio’s heart to West Ham’s embrace, Two Brazilians shine, lighting up the place.
👍😁
