“He’s Gone” Nickson Emerging As Leading Candidate For West Ham Role

As reported earlier today, Newcastle’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson is quickly becoming the favourite for the Director of Football role at West Ham.

Following reports this morning, it now appears much of the North East press has reached the conclusion that the 61-year-old could be on his way out of St James’ Park and heading south to London.

More Than A Recruitment Role

References to a “beefed-up” position suggest Nickson would have far greater responsibilities than those held by Max Hahn, who today joined Swedish side Djurgårdens as their Director of Football.

The role at West Ham appears to be part of the wider restructuring currently taking place behind the scenes as Daniel Kretinsky strengthens his influence at the football club.

Previous Candidates Fall Away

Middlesbrough’s Kieran Scott was linked with the Hammers vacancy last month.

However, as Claret & Hugh reported at the time, that particular link appeared to be more about agent Will Salthouse attempting to generate interest in his client than any serious pursuit from West Ham.

It’s fair to say that with the departures of David Sullivan and Karren Brady, the days of a Salthouse and Sully special are hopefully becoming a thing of the past.

Strong Reputation In Recruitment

Nickson has built a reputation for identifying value in the transfer market and unearthing talent that other clubs have overlooked.

During his time at Newcastle, he has been credited with helping to recruit a number of players who have gone on to become key figures at St James’ Park.

Whether he ultimately gets the job remains to be seen, but as things stand, Steve Nickson’s name is gaining more momentum than any other candidate currently linked with the role.
