“Holding Our Breath” | Lopetegui Worried as Antonio Departs

Michail Antonio’s departure to play for Jamaica in the CONCACAF Nations League could not have come at a worse time for both the player and the club.

The “Reggae Boyz” are set to face Nicaragua and Honduras over the next two weeks, and Antonio is a crucial part of a team currently sitting in second place.

I’m not entirely sure whether it’s my memory playing tricks on me, but it always seems that international football comes at a bad time for Antonio. Just when the West Ham forward appears to be hitting his stride and finding form, he flies across the Atlantic to represent Jamaica and returns home tired.

Perhaps it’s jet lag, or maybe it’s just age, but Antonio seems to need three or four games to re-acclimatise to the pace of the Premier League upon his return.

Mikey was exceptional against Ipswich in West Ham’s 4-1 win yesterday, scoring and creating goals while proving to be quite a menace. Antonio was so good that if the Hammers had a game next week, I suspect he’d keep a fit Niclas Füllkrug out of the side.

There is always a fear of injury when any player leaves for international duty, but with Antonio, it’s different. It’s not just a worry that he’ll return to Rush Green injured, but more that he’ll need easing back into the team at a time when he has just hit his top level.

Hopefully, I’m proven wrong and have nothing to worry about, but Julen Lopetegui was also concerned about the situation when speaking about his departing players.

With international breaks punctuating two-week gaps in the season in September, October, and November, it’s not going to get better any time soon. So, fingers crossed that Antonio returns home in exactly the same shape and form as he left.

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

Started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

Give West Ham opinions on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus.

Sometimes feature on BBC Radio 5 Live and once ate a biscuit in Tony Gales shed.

Connoisseur of salted caramel doughnuts and I love a Sloppy Giuseppe pizza although I'm slightly suspicious where the name came from.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

More West Ham moaning is done on a daily basis here 👇👇

should he retire, its annoying knowing the likelihood of him returning in a poor state, ifba player picks up wages and doesn’t have a huge amount of stamina left in him probably should not be playing internationally Alex Fergusson never used to have a bean of it. I know there’s rules but what about the clubs protection, a few pound notes if he returns injured just isn’t good enough.

I am a Jamaican and that’s a good move of Mickel Antonio to representing Jamaica in two crucial fixtures

  • Gaz says:

Is Alvarez heading back to represent Mexico? He came back injured and has yet to really find his stride.
Will be good for Coufal to get some game time.

  • Alan says:

Was it the Fulham game which followed the last international break?

Hooked at half time he was so bad.

  • Hmm says:

Maybe he’s keeping fit playing for Jamaica. I suppose there’s always the danger he might be tempted to smoke a little ganga out there but hopefully not. Coukd be worse if he stayed at home. At least he’s not crashing his Ferrari in a snowman costume.
