Hornets join Hammers in race for defender

West Ham – having scouted SPAL defender Francesco Vicari – have now been joined by Watford who ran the rule over the centre back at a recent game.

Hornets scout Paolo De Toffol looked the player over at the Stadio Paolo Mazza in Ferrara on Sunday following a visit by Hammers scouts a few weeks ago. Scouts from Juventus and Krasnodar were also understood to be present.

The Hammers have been reported as being ready to make a January bid for the Italian  who can also operate at left-back, while Zenit St Petersburg are also keen..

However, Watford’s scout could also have been keeping an eye on SPAL goalkeeper Gomis, who is currently enjoying a fine run of form.

And, given De Toffol was once Watford’s goalkeeper coach under Guiseppe Sannino and that he made over 300 Italian league appearances between the posts, it is fair to assume to will have been watching the 24-year-old Senegal-born keeper.
