Former West Ham manager and current Everton boss David Moyes is finally ready to pull the trigger on one of football’s most predictable summer transfers.

According to Everton News, the Toffees are set to make an offer for Tomas Soucek imminently.

Of course, the fact Moyes is interested in one of his former favourites won’t surprise anyone—but the quoted fee certainly might.

David Moyes talks to Tomas Soucek

Former boss David Moyes could take Soucek to Everton

Soucek has two years remaining on his current Hammers deal, yet the Czech international is reportedly valued at a paltry £12m. Granted, Big Sou is now 30 years of age, but that still feels incredibly low for a midfielder who guarantees goals.

While Soucek may not be the easiest player on the eye, he is a match-winner—and that’s something West Ham could desperately need next season. Jarrod Bowen will be the club’s captain and most likely top scorer, but after that, you could argue Soucek is the next most dangerous player in the side.

Clearly, Hammers boss Graham Potter is looking to bring more technical quality and pace to the midfield—and rightly so. But for the sake of an extra £12m, having an “in-case-of-emergency-break-glass” option like Soucek on the bench might be more valuable than taking the Everton money

Depends how the money is then used. But I do agree, that quoted fee seems too low. Should be 15-20.

  • West Ham Fan No 32 says:

We have lost goals with Kudus, Antonio, and arguably Ings leaving plus Emerson on his way out Benrahma and Fornals the season before and we have gained very few. If we let Soucek often our second highest goal getter go what will that do for us ? We need more goals not less, Harvey Elliot if we can get him will likely score, hopefully Diouf will chip in with a few and likewise if Fullkrug can stay fit maybe 15 there but am not seeing us linked with regular goal scorers and also Soucek does a lot defensively at the other end…

  • Mick bering says:

No way should we sell him Without him last term I believe we could well have been relegated He scores vital goals works hard and loves the club through and through No disrespect to Bowen I feel he would have made a really good captain and leader

  • Ray says:

I thought Tomas had rejected the idea of moving to Everton or Leeds a couple of days ago.

  • Dudley Tyler says:

If Fullkrug is fit and firing he should be in the places that Tomas gets his goals from.

  • stewart whiteford says:

For me personally I would be offering him another year on his contract and then a further year if both sides agree. Just because Potter may not rate him as highly as Moyes it maybe Potter might not be here all season then we have let go probably one of the three top performers last season and somebody who will punish us at least twice a year for every season he is at Everton. Sorry but Moyes knows best on this occasion.

  • pat says:

So a player who gets the club and the fans gets booted and elbowed in the face for the cause and is a menace in the box is being considered worth selling…cannot wait to hear that the bid was to good to turn down rubbish that will come out from the board.
If anyone deserves a contract upgrade it is Soucek not on footballing ability alone but the rest he brings and gives to the club and fans….if they sell him it will be another mistake this summer and along with Fornals a sale that should not be made but hey if it means we can offer Antonio better terms!!!!!! yup Sullivan and co just leave you do not and never have had a clue how to run a football club unless it’s into the ground.

    • stewart whiteford says:

Week in week out he gives his all if i was selling anyone to Everton there would be a fair list i would let go before Soucek even if you took just his goals into consideration the starting price should be 25 million.

  • Slater says:

He’s seen what a walkover Sullivan is. He knows we’ll sell for 8m eventually.

  • Paul Basnett says:

I was hoping Moyes wanted Ward Prowse. Doh.

  • Matt says:

Keep Soucek, ditch Rodriguez and JWP!

Unfortunately for us nobody is crazy enough to want to sign our deadwood as they are on massive wages. We will be stuck with those two like we were with Ings.

I’d be gutted if we let Soucek join Everton, unless they want to pay north of £20m!

Got a horrible feeling Sullivan will once again sell for a lower fee and will sign Brownhill to replace him.

  • Spindrift says:

Soucek is the most valuable central midfielder we have. He is aerially one of the best in the prem both attacking and defensive. He is the one midfielder we can depend on to put a shift in, and time and time again he scores important goals. His attitude is excellent and, unlike many, he loves the club and the fans. What he provides is worth any amount of clever little flicks or Hollywood passes that go nowhere.

There is no way he should be sold, but if he must have a price tag, it should be in the region of £40m. Because he will win matches for any team he goes to.

  • John Sharp says:

There are 3 or 4 midfield players that I would unload before Soucek.

As for £12m, when are we ever quoted such a low figure for a PL regular. If Moyes wants him he must stump up a lot more.

  • Carrick hammer says:

Take the money and send JWP instead after all it was moyes who inflicted him on us.

  • Dudley Tyler says:

Getting twelve million for a player does not mean you have twelve million to spend under the financial rules. You get to recognize the fee (less book value which in Tomas case is not going to be a lot). Then you buy a player and what you need to include in the accounts for the year is whatever installments you need to pay in that year. So there’s a multiplier effect. Then Tomas is on 87k a week. Going on for four and a half million. That’s a big gain as well. Letting Tomas go for twelve million may give you enough headroom to buy a thirty million pound younger player. And in two years that player should be worth a lot more than a 32 year old Tomas.

  • Wjo1974 says:

Everyone mentions the goals he scores but no one ever says how his lack of pace and dropping back costs us goals. He costs more goals than he scores. I love his commitment and the fact he puts his body on the line for the shirt and yes, he really does come up with some very important goals but if you watch back over the past two seasons I would say the majority of goals against us are due to his lack of pace being walked past in the middle of the park and his dropping off on the edge of the box, when he should shut down. At 30 years old and two years left I think we should cash in but more around £16m-£20m mark.

    • Ian says:

Absolutely spot on. Be of the main reasons we’ve struggled recently is playing Soucek in midfield. He hasn’t got the pace, athleticism or basic technique to play that role. It leaves us weak and exposed. Yes he pops up with a goal now and then. But the disadvantages of playing him in midfield far outweigh the advantages.
If he stays it should be as a bench player. Throw him on up front for the last 20 minutes when we’re desperate, as a second striker.
Better still, sell him, buy younger, more technically gifted midfielders and a striker who scores, and you don’t miss Soucek

  • Hammeroo says:

Tomas must stay! He is a match winner for us and he also defends well. I think we would be losing a great guy who loves this club and has always done his very best for us, even sometimes getting bloodied for the cause. I can’t see any sense in letting him go for such little money. He deserves some respect!

  • mark wiggins says:

    😂😂😂😂

  • Ian says:

    I’ll drive him there!

  • Hammerpete6 says:

Like him or not (I do!) Tomas bags goals and vital ones. He is big in both penalty areas and as the article says he is worth more to us in that capacity than a lowball fee. I see the midfield problem to be Ward-Prowse, we can accommodate Tomas or use him off the bench.

  • Lokfaen says:

As you point out, he guarantees goals (avg 7.4 goals per season last 5 seasons). For 12m, assuming he keeps the average, that would be 1.62m per goal scored. To put that into perspective, Harvey Elliot (or any other player) at 40m, would be 24 goals… I recognize this is just playing with numbers, and I have mixed feelings about the big guy, but we should not forget the goals tend to be match-defining goals as well.
