How to make Bonzo a part of East End forever

full_Bonds_Billy_781226CsportNewham Council has made it clear it wants a permanent reminder of West Ham’s connection to remain in the Borough.

It follows their decision to allow the famous statue of Bobby, Geoff and Martin to be moved from the Barking Road junction, where it currently stands, to the Olympic Stadium.

And forum members at ClaretandHugh have immediately made it clear that this is a perfect opportunity to honour Billy Bonds – a sentiment we heartily endorse.

Sadly Bill can’t be remembered at the new stadium after the club took up it’s naming rights allowance but Newham’s insistence leaves the way clear for Bonzo to be remembered in the area he became such a hero forever.

CndH follower “Bubs” wrote: “Just what we need replace the statue with another with Billy Bonds being the main man. Maybe a team of greats in the kit of the day figures slightly smaller then the Bobby Moore one. That would be something that could be for Billy Bonds.”

And “Dainon” wrote: “Billy Bonds with the FA Cup …. He is Mr West Ham.

ClaretandHugh agrees with this great suggestion and will put it on Newham Council so if you support the idea let us know below.”

A new statue could possibly include other iconc members of our past such as Ron Greenwood and John Lyall.

  1. Don’t agree with that. There should be some sort of statue or memorial that reflects the 100+ years we were there, not just recent player(s). What about all the greats from the past? Don’t they matter any more? Vic Watson, Jim Barrett, Ernie Gregory etc

  2. Sparrow that’s why I said a team of greats wearing there kit of the time but to make it fit the space make the figures a bit smaller,
The club could hold a vote to see which players get remembered, but don’t forget some greats already have things named after them,
It was just a thought mate to remember my personal favourite player of all time,
But I do get what you are saying,
Maybe we could get the RailwY to change the station to Bonds End

  3. Bonzo definitely,
    Brooking, Cottee and Martin.

I’m in Apollo Bay, Vic now but when I go back for a pint in the Boleyn it would be great to see something really special to replace our World Cup Hero’s
    COYI
    Alan

  4. Its a good idea but will it be possible to accomadate everyone ? IMO it needs a monolith of some sort with everybody on it from day 1 to the move engraved on a plaque. Giving the full history . Bonzo should have his own statue simply because he deserves it , end of !!
Maybe a trio with greenwood and lyall either side !! Maybe we could all chip in to make it possible and add a personal touch .

  5. Don’t think we can get everyone to agree John maybe it would be better to have more statues at the new ground and something different at this area, as you say maybe something remembering the Managers,

  6. Bonzo, Brooking and John Lyall, what would also be good is if they could have a statue of him is Clyde Best to celebrate the ethnical diversity of our club and the barriers he helped break down for black footballers in Britain at a difficult time for them.
