How we rated the Irons against Doncaster

Hugh hands out the marks

Fabianski: Virtually had an afternoon off. Lovely smile for youngster Nathan Trott when he took over near the end. An extra point for the alone 6+

Fredericks: Terrific assist for the opening goal and always busy looking to supply aerial power into the box 7

Diop: Looked rusty with a clumsy tackle early on but grew into it despite there being little to threaten us 6

Balbuena: Looked as though he’d never been away – entirely competent 7

Johnson: Steady game on the left and one great shot near the end was well saved 6+

Noble: Did a tidy job in the middle of the park 7

Soucek: Always the guvnor in what looked like a training ground exercise for him. Needed two good saves to stop him adding to his season’s goal tally 7+

Big moment for young keeper Nathan Trott

Fornals: Grabbed the opener from close range and was lively all afternoon 7

Benrahma: Lots of really good creative stuff and linked well with Lanzini 7+

Lanzini: Still not at his top level but this was the best we’ve seen for a while 7

Yarmolenko: Played as the centre forward and proved to be the answer many have suggested. Threatening all afternoon and a nice goal  8

Subs

Afolayan: Burley striker in the mould approved of by the manager. Grabbed a debut goal and looked very promising 6+

Baptiste: Came on late but showed real enthusiasm to get involved. This lad’s a prospect 6

Trott: He’s waited a long time for his big moment and although he had little to do it was great to see him out there. 6

  1. I think Yarmo has proved here he is the answer up front as back up to Antonio. Moyes seems to specialise in turning wingers into good strikers. No need to waste money in January. Wait till summer to bring in another striker. Benrahma frustrates me the amount of times he gives the ball away to the opposition. Fortunately Doncaster weren’t the greatest of teams and were unable to capitalise on it. Second half though I thought Benrahma improved and started to make some fantastic passes, cutting through balls etc. Think he might just need a goal or two to increase his confidence and then we’ll see a better player. At the moment I think if anything he is trying too hard.

    • Totally disagree he is no way the awnser…wait til we have a tough run of prem games and we will see how inadequate he is ..but tgats just my opinion, i hope I’m wrong ..

    • Agree. The only thing I might add is that Fournals can play for Bowen if needed. He showed well and managed to find the net.

  2. Good and fair ratings, Hugh. And nice comments relative to each player. Thank you sir. God bless.

  3. It was a good game but think Johnson deserves more credit although everyone was brilliant noble was no where near a 7 good few times got beat by there midfield but he worked hard benrahamma should of been mom as soon as he gets that goal I think we’ve have some player on our hands

  4. Good ratings Hugh. As I have said before Benrahma has potential but at the moment he needs to get better with his decision making we do lose possession when the wingbacks push on which could cost us against top sides. It was a great result as we have lost games like this in the past. Moyes has really done a great job making us a team who are hard to beat. The future looks good for our great club COYI

  5. It’s really great that Rice could get some rest at last. So far he had played every minute of the season, whatever the competion!

  6. Noble a 5 at best, had so much time but slowed everything up. Watch the game again and his passing not under pressure is about two yards to short to players an not infront of them and gives opposition time to be on top of the player instead of him having time to get head up to see where next pass going
