How we rated the Irons against Lyon

Hughie hands out his marks

Areola: No chance with a poorly defended goal but two or three good saves and a safe pair of hands 7

Fredericks: Got dragged all over the pitch early, might have done better for the goal and never felt you could fully trust him 5

Dawson: Some magnificent defending particularly at the end – excellent performance on a really difficult night 8

Zouma: Didn’t put a foot wrong and keeps everything so simple 8

Cresswell: Criminally sent off for a nothing foul but fairly anonymous before that 5

Rice: Better second half than first – not at the usual high level 7

Soucek: Defended well but when down to 10 was forced to sit rather than attack 6

Fornals: Excellent game – barely wasted a pass, set up the goal and was always a threat 9

Benrahma: Continues to frustrate – saw a lot of the ball wide on the left but rarely got past the defenders

Bowen: Had a lot to do to finish off the goal and always working his socks off, Well done mate 8

Antonio: Worked so hard, held the ball up brilliantly and some great knock on to create chances but needs someone alongside 8

Johnson: On at half time for Benrahma – let nobody down 6

  1. Great ratings, could not fault one of them. I hope Coufal is ready to play at the weekend because Fredericks is just a passenger. I realised tonight that he cannot even take a proper throwin !! Moyes has a huge decision to make now at LB, Longello, Masuaka or Johnson. I feel if we play Johnson we will get nothing going forward. I felt for Benrahma as even though nothing really came off for him, he worked hard. I hope Lanzini is fit to play at the weekend too. A big week for Moyes.

  2. I thought Lyon missed a trick at 11 v 10. They could’ve got much more joy out of Fredericks rather than by trying to play through the middle or down our left. I rarely criticise Moyes, but it’s difficult to see how he could have two right backs on the bench in Ben and Vlad, and decide to start with Fredericks, who, I agree with you Hugh, did not inspire confidence from the first whistle. Indeed, you could argue Lyon should have had a penalty off him in the 6th minute.

  3. i have heard but dont know the truth of it that this Referee has been twice been done for fraud for match fixing and am asking why is it if true been allowed to referee this game? because there are so many of us that were unhappy with what was going on in the first half.
also can i make a comment on the SO CALLED FANS invading the pitch certainly the last one that really could of cost us the game and euro intentions when we were in an a attacking formation and so near to there goal.
this i cannot forgive. if found that they were west ham fans they should without doubt get life time bans. TOTAL MORONS

  4. Excellent marks and comments …. Bewildered as to why Fredericks plays .. He is very poor defensively . Antonio layed off some good balls but is not a goal scoring centre forward . More mistakes by Rice than in the rest of the season combined . He looks leggy and in need of a rest . Resilience 10 out of 10 but the awful mishandling of the squad by Moyes is catching up fast . The depth of squad for him to draw from is non existent but there is only one person to blame … himself .Will it be same officials next week ?? COYI
