How we rated the Irons against Palace

Hughie hands out his marks

Fabianski: Couple of fine stops and little chance with wither goal. No complaints 6

Kehrer: Very poor game, Regularly on wrong side of his man and lost control of a pass from the back which led to the Palace equaliser 3

Dawson: What you see is what you get from big Daws. Solid performance 6

Zouma: Strong at the heart of defence but needs to improve in possession 6

Cresswell: Forced on to the back foot most of the time and saw little of him forcing stuff down the left as a result 6

Soucek: Subbed and rightly so in the second half, Some sloppy passing and distribution 4

Rice: Got forward more in Soucek’s absence but still as reliable defensively as it gets 7

Paqueta: Lots of nice touches and creative passes but those around him didn’t always read his stuff 7

Benrahma: Fabulous goal of the month qualifier but little after that and ultimately subbed 6

Bowen: Always available for the out ball and the odd moment of menace 6

Scamacca Subbed at half time after a near zero performance in the first when he had little to feed off 4

Subs

Antonio: Had a penalty decision turned around after being seen to go down too easily. And his gift to Palace keeper near the end led to break away from which Palace scored 5

Downes: Little impact 5

Lanzini: One or two decent touches 5

Fornals: Very late sub No rating

  1. Broadly agree, but Soucek is a 2 for me. He offers absolutely nothing and slows us down to a pedestrian pace. What does he have to do to be dropped?? I’m not sure he could do any less.

Downes… little impact? Watch it back and see how, other than getting caught initially, actually had some energy and always looked to pass the ball forward.

Downes is our future, not Soucek. He needs minutes alongside Rice to learn from him before he inevitably leaves to play under a dynamic manager next Summer.

And I feel for Benrahma. He should’ve taken off Paqueta, moved Bennie inside and brought Fornals on earlier.

  2. Agree about Kehrer and Scamacca, they had very poor games. Soucek was appalling, both positionally and in possession. Why did he play two thirds of the game? When Downes and Lanzini came on we finally passed it. I just can’t get why Moyes seems unable to read the game and change it, and just subbing Scamacca and Benny off is plain naive. Depressing performance and management.
