How we rated the Irons against Palace

Hugh hands out the marks on another disappointing afternoon

Hart: A series of remarkable saves made him the man of the match which really tells you all you need to know about the Irons performance 8

Zabaleta: Had his toughest examination of the season against  Zaha and failed it. Forgiven on the back of his previous excellence but an unhappy outing 4

Fonte:  Hung in there but lack of pace against a sprightly second half Palacedisplay was worrying and also missed a couple of chances from set pieces

Ogbonna: Awful display – gave away the penalty and was always stretched. Poor display 4

Noble: He is what he is and it was another of those five performances on a  day when only the keeper shone 5

Cresswell: Ditto – withdrawn at half time after offering little despite Arnautovic’s absence 5

Kouyate: Not the high energy performer he once was and perhaps being wasted in being given some defensive futies to attend to.  5

Fernandes: Neat and tidy but once again failing to make a serious impact out of midfield 5

Ayew: Worked hard and scored our best goal of the season so far but unseen as the team went into that second half shell 6

Chicharito: Typical goal which really should have set us off on a comfortable victory journey but little beyond that 5

Lanzini: The one player who showed genuine quality on the ball but the supporting cast weren’t on the same wavelength 7

Subs:

Rice: On for Fonte and is to the manner born. One remarkable intervention close to goal and always looking to find a get out ball to ease pressure. Love him

Masuaku: Mistake followed mistake and no impact going forward 4

Antonio: Awful decision making at the end effectively cost us the game. Until then the usual energetic performance 4

  1. Same old story.

  2. Sorry Fonte just does not have the pace for PL anymore, Cresswell is terrible and has been all season. Fernandez offers us very little. And Noble is Noble. I thought it was a poor team selection today from the outset, I thought I had been proved wrong but if the truth was told we were second best today against a team below us. How Anautovic, Sakho and Obiang cannet get into this team just belies belief. I like Bilic but enough is enough we move on as long as we get a proper manager.

    • Are you serious?!? You just can’t please some people, and it’s easy to knock team selections and performance after the fact. When I saw the team today, I thought it looked good, with enough of Wednesday’s heroics included to help bolster the team. That looked to be the case up until half time. It wasn’t enough over the entire 90 minutes, and we obviously still don’t have it right, but enough with the constant negativity. Coupled with today’s result, crap like this just makes it worse. #it’sEasyFromYourArmchair

      • That team out there today was the worst team put on paper this season so far !
You clearly see a different game to the rest of us buddy ! The armchair shyte don’t wash to good either ?
As you write from you’re exempt armchair thinking you have it right !! Not !!!
FYI I called the team before the game as suspect and proved right after the game as did 32 who had his doubts ? So its easy to predict before as well as after it seems lol 😎

  3. Another stay of execution. The Liverpool match before the international break is the real pivotal one. Some improvement in last 2 games but bitterly disappointing to not hang on.Players need to respond after this and again it will boil down to how we play at Home.We all know how toxic it can turn if the fans do not like what they see.Always felt that it would be the next home game after the Brighton debacle that will ultimately decide the managers future.

  4. I think Rice will be an outstanding player – but he isn’t yet. He does seem to have an easier time of things when it comes to being marked on this site. He was nowhere near a 7 – what did he do to defend their equaliser? Ball went through his legs!

  5. Rice is useful and is definitely an important part of our future. But you are far too in love with the guy. Should have done better to prevent their second goal.

As for Ayew, the guy has been involved in more goals than anyone else since joining us. I agree he is often absent, but the stats don’t lie and he tops the important one. When will you give him more credit?

  6. This game reminded me of the 2-1 WIN we got over Hull a few seasons back and the team were booed off at full time. It was the fact that no effort was shown to see out the match or the willingness of some players to have a bit of intelligence to keep the ball and make the easy passes. We haven’t learned under Sam or Slav how to run games down comfortably at 1 goal or 2 goals up and ensure everyone goes home happy.
