How we rated the Irons v Brighton

|

Hughie hands out his marks

Fabianski: No chance again with the goals and generally okay but why on earth does he take so long clearing balls allowing the opposition to organise themselves 7

Couval: Another all action performance from Vlad ‘the destroyer’  without getting too much support 7

Balbuena: No complaints – steady performance 6+

Ogbonna: Another very good excursion for the Hammers defender on a day when he needed one 7

Cresswell: Always looking to get forward but crossing not always on the money. Ok at the back 6

Noble: Err, why in a game which demanded we attack? Brought little to the table 5

Rice: Not his best day – worked hard of course but a few untypical mistakes here and there and could be part blamed for a Brighton goal 6

Soucek: Got better in the second half and scored another vital goal after a misdirected header led to Dunk’s goal 6

Johnson: Grabbed his first goal for the club as he was drafted in at left sided midfield when essentially he’s a right back 6

Bowen: Looked worn out from first minute and subbed at half time 5

Haller: More involved than we have seen previously – some decent runs and passes here and there  – certainly an improvement 6+

Subs:

Yarmolenko: Set up the equaliser, always busy and threatening during his second half 7+

Lanzini: Always looking for the ball and showed plenty of  movement 6

Pathetic performance and awful tactics and selection. Neville got it totally right, we paid far too much respect to a team bottom of the table and the selection was not right from the start. 170 minutes since we had a shot on target is shameful for any professional club never mind a Premiership team, yet Moyes continued to go with a so called lone “striker” who was totally anonymous and Noble who adds nothing. Yet he left Benrahma, Lanzini and Yamo on the bench. Haller cannot hold up play, never wins any headers and strike rate is awful but inexplicably Moyes left Haller on for the whole game. Moyes had begun to turn the team into a genuine top half team with good football but has now reverted to negative tactics and slow boring sideways and backwards football with no creativity.

I actually thought that Haller was a lot better in the second half – because Lanzini was there to pick up his knock downs he gave the ball away a lot less

Like many others I cannot fathom why Moyes decided to start Noble – it was a bit sad in the first half when a Brighton player sold him a diummy and just ran away leaving him standing

I also thought that Johnson did well all round – defending well and trying to make himself available as an outlet – I think that his versatility is a plus

    • DiCanio Dec says:

And there you go. “Gave the ball away less”.
He’s our most expensive player ever. In our history.
He should t be giving the ball away period.
And he should be trying. Making some effort.
It’s like playing with 10 men.

  • James Clarke says:

Haller was awful again, more like a 2 or 3. £45m?? What a waste of money.

    • master says:

Simply abysmal. When Soucek scored, he didn’t even make a run or any kind of movement on our own corner. 45 million pound man can’t be botrthed to move at his own teams corner. Joke.

  • Claretvolcanoes says:

Lanzini and Yarmalenko made a difference when they came on. I thought Johnson played really well today and was worth a bit a bit more. Awful first half but better 2nd and a draw was probably about all we deserved today. Be interesting to see the line up at Southampton because our energy levels will need to be better than they were today. The whole squad needs to be used with games so close together

  • Hammerpete says:

Well Hugh I feel you are more of a gentleman than I – in that Nobes was literally in the way in my opinion – he actually stopped Souceck from going forward I thought! Seb Haller, well, a real talent at ghosting – like he nearly holds the ball, nearly tackles, nearly presses high up, but somehow manages to do none of the above! Waste of a score at all!! Finally – awful team selection DM – you are turning me into an alcoholic mate!!!

  • Childish says:

Haller 6 plus ,,,really,,he cost us a goal for starters and is just plain awful ,,my 8 yearold daughter could knick him ofthe ball ….???? I think I better refrain from commenting more ….

  • Tim Hutchings says:

You watch the same game as me ???

    • Probably not as I rty to be fair and can you find a new line – that’s about as cliched as it gets. G’day

      • Trevor Dean says:

Come on Hugh, Haller was off the pace, out of touch with his teammates and gave them little aim at. It’s as though we’ve played with 10 players for large parts of the games since Antonio has been out. A wonder goal does not make a season.
