How we rated the Irons v Cardiff

ClaretandHugh’s Sergey Novyish hands out the marks
Fabianski
You can’t ask for more from your goalkeeper! Excellent game-changing performance. Few world-class saves (including a saved penalty). Very unlucky not to keep a clean sheet in the end! 9

Diop
This guy is quality. Brilliant defensively. Supported attack well on a few occasions too. 8

Ogbonna
Top performance from Oggy today. No silly mistakes, had two great chances to score from corners. 8

Antonio
Good-old Antonio is back! Pace, energy, goals.. he has it all. He wins corners and then scores from em! but.. still a liability defensively sometimes 8

Masuaku
From zero to hero. King Arthur is back with amends. Great runs and passes (incl. goal assist) but also a great defensive play including few crucial blocks and interceptions. 8

Anderson
Started the game by withdrawing from a challenge and provoking a few boos from the stands. But then showed everyone what he is really capable of. His skills and football thinking is world class. Just run into the box and he will find you with a killer pass. 9

Hernandez
Had a lively start, tried few clever one-twos with Arnie, but been pretty anonymous today tbh. 6

Snodgrass
Just love this guy’s attitude. Ran his socks off. Pressed the opposition, created numerous chances and two goals, very good deliveries from corners and free-kicks..Fans favorite for sure. Go, Snoddy, go! 9

Noble
Tried hard and been quite useful (but not faultless) defensively (few good interceptions) and offensively (clever pass to Masuaku just before Lucas scored) 7

Rice
Another complete performance from the lad. Could’ve scored few times, but his defensive contribution is way more valuable atm. 9

Arnautovic
A day to forget for Arnie. Wasted (and created) few good chances, then made a stupid challenge and conceded a penalty. Let’s just hope his injury isn’t too bad. 5

SUBS

Perez
Replaced Arnie and surprised us all in a good way. Two high-end finishes. Two goals in space of five minutes. 9
Carroll
Did OK, but needs game time. Tried hard, won a few headers and created few half-chances for himself and teammates, but could’ve done better in his own box to prevent Cardiff’s consolation. 6

Diang
Spent 20 minutes on the pitch, but been involved in more attacking action than Hernandez. Incredible young talent. 8

  1. Good Mark’s for them as far as I can see pretty right too

  2. Agree in the main but think you’re too harsh on Noble. I’m not always his biggest fan but I thought he was very good tonight and had him just as MOTM. I guess we all see things differently COYI

    • Yeah. It was between 8 and 7 for Mark, and I am his big admirer tbh. Gives everything all the time. But he has a great support from Rice in the middle, whilst Arthur is on his own on the flank. And with the amount of (deserved) criticism and (undeserved) abuse Masuaku got after Citeh game he bounced back pretty well IMO.

  3. I thought Masuaku whilst having a lot of the ball didn’t do much would have given him 6 and Hernandez 7 I thought he really closed down well from the front apart from that agree with the markings COYI!!!

  4. Good to see players upping their game and now we have really good competition for places in the starting 11 and goals coming from players other than Arnie. Its coming together for Pelles grand plan of attractive attacking football.Marks spot on Sergey.

  5. I know it doesn’t warrant a rating but I take great pleasure in seeing Chicharito’s smile and him congratulating team mates on their passes and goals. It’s a big plus for team morale.

  6. I think that 8s and 9s are shown too easily when we win and 3s and 4s when we lose.
I would prefer to see a rating of the whole performance not just scoring. Perez at best was a 6 and give him 1 for the goals. So a 7. Rice top performer with an 8.
8.5 + should be saved for something truly special which I do not think we have seen so far this season.
